HDD fix bad sectors

Hello guys, can anyone recommend on how to fix the problem with HDD.

I have a 3.5 HDD HGST
SATA 6Gb/s
RPM 7200 RPM

I noticed if I write any data after 1Tb it can't be read for example a blue ray movie (unable to watch). At the same time I can copy files to and from even if it's after 1 Tb. Any advice ? Which program I should use for diagnostics etc?

HDD Regenerator it will cause the bad sectors to be marked bad then spare sector to replace it. Or you can try spinrite. Neither one can fix bad sectors, but can test to see if it should be marked bad and unusable. You should not use either one for data recovery.

You can also run the built-in windows utility: Chkdsk (volume letter): /r from a command prompt. It will scan the disk and try to recover data, bad sectors will also be recorded (usually by the drive's firmware, upon being read and reallocated)

I'd check the SMART data with something like crystaldiskinfo or HWinfo. Bad sectors cannot be "fixed", usually a sign of a larger issue and/or impending failure if you have a lot or they are increasing. Goes without saying, backup your data ASAP or don't store anything you wouldn't want to lose.

This is an internal drive connected via SATA cable inside the computer? I only ask because I've seen external drives/USB to SATA controllers have issues with certain drives where data would be unreadable past a certain volume and the drive would report false bad sectors.

Thank you for the reply guys, I use it for a NAS to watch movies, and store some non critical data.

You can try https://www.hdat2.com/ to regenerate (remagnetize) sectors. It's freeware.

HDD Regenerator does the same thing, but is not free.

Just to add comments above, if it is bad sectors I would replace the drive. It's been along while, but most times I had bed sectors, more bad sectors would show up later. To keep data safe, replacing the drive before it got worse always seemed like a good idea.

bad sectors can spread, but you can find out by using one of the bad sector mapping programs already listed above, then doing it again in a month.

Mybe your drive is formatted wrong. You mentioned trying to save a large Blu-Ray movie - maybe the file is too big for the disk format you are using.

Have you checked the SMART data? Bad sectors should show up there. Try and run a SMART test & any HDD diagnostic software provided by the manufacturer first, before trying a repair program

I thought this, initially, but even FAT16 allows for 2GB file sizes.

+1 for spinrite. I have been using that utility since the 80's when I had to set interleave on MFM, and RLL drives (before IDE and SATA came out).

UBCD, and use Vivard to remap the bad sectors. Then recover what you can and replace the drive.

This is why you first run diagnostic and then the repair. Doing random fixes only results in confusion & data loss. Run an extended SMART Test and check if the manufacturer has a diag software to run on the drive

Which mode did you use. I would use the slowest regeneration mode since it will do multiple reads and writes.

Edit: delays are nothing to worry about. If the delays got much longer it becomes marked as a bad sector

what video player are you using??
maybe player or codec issue that can't play that blue-ray movie

I have a Samsung Smart TV UN65KU7000FXZC.
It';s not just blue-ray other file formats as well. Is it possible that it can't read beyond 1TB of disk space ? I have 6Tb disk drive that I'm connecting using USB.

I use built in Player.

If it's a codec issue it would mark file with a cross and throw a massage it can't play with other files it plays something else that is on the drive as well. Even in a thumbnail preview you can see that it shows content of a different file.

One test you can do, Copy that blue-ray movie to a flash drive and see if the TV can play it.
