Heat pump water heaters

My provincial utility is offering a $1,000 rebate for installing electric heat pump water heaters. That's a switch from the past where rebates were offered on tankless heaters (but no longer).

I've never heard of such a beast before, and none of the big box stores in Canada offer such a beast but they do in the U.S. where prices start from $1,300. Just wondering how reliable these things are?

The water heater is a ~14 y.o. unit which may need replacement soon so am considering options. The leading candidate is a Rheem lstic tank heater.
