Help Choose My First Watch

Hi, everyone here. I've been looking at some watches online and did a little research of my own. I'm looking for something that's sleek and reliable. I'm a college student (24 y/o) and I want something that I can wear on a daily basis. The watch I want has to be black, I would like the bracelet to be a black ceramic or stainless steel. I'm not looking for anything too flashy, so no gems, diamonds, gold, etc. I would like it to be somewhat casual.
Price range: $250-350 (I will go higher if I need to, but I prefer not to)

I've been looking at a few watches and these two are the ones that caught my attention the most.

1. Armani ar1414 on Armaniwatchesonsale.com: Emporio Armani Watch AR1414 Mens Black Automatic Ceramica $231.00
This is my favorite one. I really like that its completely black, it has a ceramic bracelet, and the skeleton looks amazing. I believe the movement is Japanese (although I could be wrong). The reason why I haven't purchased it yet is because i don't know its quality and longevity, but it's $359.99 on Ebay.com, i dont know why the site is so low. I've been trying to look for reviews on the ar1414, but there are none. Then I researched reviews on Armani watches in general and I found mixed reviews.

2. Bulova 98a108 on Amazon.com: Bulova Men's 98A108 Marine Star Mechanical Hand-Wind Automatic Black Dial Watch
From my research they produce decent quality watches for a decent price. Its definitely not a rolex, but the quality is nice enough for my needs. I love everything about this watch except for one thing... I hate the two silver lines across the bracelet. In my opinion it looks too flashy and that I would only be able to wear it for special occasions. Which is why I will not buy it.

I apologize for the long post, but I wanted to be very specific. If anyone could post comments on the Armani ar1414 or even suggest models that look similar and near the same price. I would greatly appreciate it.

Go on eBay - if you look around for awhile you can get a demo model citizen skyhawk for under $300. I paid around $270 for mine a year ago. Retail on the watch is $800.

I went for the black bracelet - was thinking the paint might fade but so far it's held up brilliantly.

If it is between the two, I got with Bulova, which is still a real watch brand and now a subsidiary of Citizen Watch Co.

The mov't in the Armani is likely not Japanese but Chinese, since the parent company - Fossil, makes most of their watches there.

However, like many have said, I would look beyond the two brands and got with something from Citizen, Sekio or Swiss with an ETA mov't.

Don't let the brand name of these fashion watches fool you. Their movement inside can be cheap quartz China worth about $20 bucks. Safest and easiest way is go for a Swiss Movement.

Armani = definitely not worth the price. Unless you don't care what's inside (movement). Its like paying a Lexus price for a Neon engine. Ok, prob not the best comparison, but its the inside that should dictate the price, not the fancy look or name.

Buulova = that's more of a real watch.

My suggestion for you would be in your price range:

Tissot
Luminox <-- very cool tritium gas tubes
Swiss Army/Victorinox: An awesome first watch. Real, tough, reliable, Swiss movements, lots of choices. There's actually a sale going on:

Please don't buy any fashion type brand watches: DKNY, Diesel, Armani, Kenneth Cole, etc. Not worth its money.

OH ya, congrats !!! You are on your way to an awesome, and addictive hobby ! I have: Ball, Fortis, Tissot, Omega, Rolex, Casio, Swiss Army, Victorinox, Luminox, and looking at Breitlings.

hi i suggest citizen, TimeX (less than your budget), and Hamilton( abit higher)....the design and style does not match the brands you listed, so they were a meh for me:/

Citizen:

Hamilton:

hav fun! and in my OWN opinion, im a University student too.. a hollow skeleton design watches conveys complexity and seniority. I think at our age, we would be better suited to a watch with a honest and sleek design C:

Indeed. Orient (part of Seiko) also makes terrific watches. Another option is buying an used one online off someone reputable in a forum like Watchuseek - you may find some good brands like Hamilton or Tissot at great prices.

But as mentioned, don't buy a Guess or Armani watch - they don't even manufacture them so how can it truly be a Guess/Armani product technically?

Not a fan of watches where a fashion company brands the watch. They generally suck.

I like Seiko's at that price range.

From what has been suggested, my vote goes to the Bulova.

However, my own advice would be to get a used Omega Speedmaster "Reduced". Will be in the early thousands, but will be an amazing starting piece to any collection.

OP, I would be wary of purchasing from that website, it does not look trustworthy.

I would get it from the official Armani website, or from Amazon.

For what it's worth I am also in the market for a moderately priced watch, and I think I've settled on the Citizen AT0810-12E. It may make sense, since the Navitimers have always been my dream watches.

Seems to be available from most of the big US watch sites, from $145 to $165 + shipping. To me it looks damn good for the price, and I think it should be of reasonable quality.

Great choice, really like the look without the digital display on the Hawk myself, too.

Only minus for me is the lack of sapphire crystal, but the big bezel make help making scratches less likely to happen.
