Help Please! Insurance crazy high?

Hi all! Just wondering if anyone could provide me with some insight as to why my rates are so high, & if there's anything I can do about it.

I'm a 29 year old female in Durham Region Ontario, drive a 2012 Ford Fusion, with no accidents, no tickets. I first got my license when I was 16 up to the G2 stage & was an occasional driver on both my parents policies until I was about 20. Unfortunately I let it expire while I went away for school. At 24 I went through the whole process again, getting my G1, G2 & G, waiting the appropriate times & even taking a drivers education course again.

When I bought my car 2 years ago, my insurance was $221 a month. The next renewal it jumped to $291, and this coming year the rates are now expected to be $330.

Can anyone help me wrap my head around why my rates just seem to be going up and up? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Try insuring through your university/college alumni association? If not and even so, shop around.

Hey, private insurance is supposed to be cheaper. That's what the Insurance Bureau of Canada keeps claiming in B.C. in hopes of getting friendly ears/greasable palms to kill the public insurer.

At 29, you shouldn't be paying $4k for econo box living in boone. If it was a Civic or Corolla I could understand.

Are you with belair by any chance? Places that offer cheapest insurance when searching for a quote usually does that for the first year. Like belair, sonnet.

Time to shop around for better insurance and there isn't any loyalty when it comes to insurance. Go change every year if you can find cheaper one.

Yea, you screwed yourself by letting it expire.

Try alumni discounts through tdmm. You can also increase your deductible to as much as you can afford. I think $2k is reasonable.

I'm currently with Travellers. I've been looking around but most seem similar. When I spoke to a broker they said it could be because my previous driving/insurance history before my expiration won't be taken into account. Regardless of that, with no tickets or accidents, paying over $4200 a year for a 2012 Ford Fusion seems wild to me. Definitely going to keep looking though.

Don't put your real (name and address) info into any of these insurance calculators. Do use a similar postal code with obviously a different address.
You can download an iOS/Android app with a second phone number which you will use to create different accounts.

I would expect to see a rate somewhat between your first and second.

There is no way you should be paying that much. I was quoted like 89 bucks a month for a 2009 Pontiac Vibe.

Shop around, Try Belair first.

I moved from BC to ON. My insurance costs exactly the same in both provinces. *shrugs*

How much do you drive? Is it for work or just personal?

What a clever comment Face With Rolling Eyes hopefully if you're a 29 year old male with no tickets or accidents, you'll have better luck than I'm currently having. Thanks for the input though!

It's just for personal and I drive about 30 km one way for work each day.

I think you may be the exception here. I used to pay $238 a month for my Protege back in 2008, and that's when I worked for the company I was insured with and was receiving a 30% employee discount.

For the OP, I think it may be the distance you're driving each day to work. That's what really drove it up for me, apparently.
