Help with wiring house for ethernet

Hey - recently purchased my first home in the GVA and doing some renos, so wanted to take the opportunity to wire up part of the house with ethernet. I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed by all the different cabling choices, so wanted to see if someone here could point me in the right direction.

Is CAT6 the way to go? Ideally would like to future proof for the next 5-10 years.

What gauge should I use?

Any recommended cabling places that can get my cable quickly in BC?

House is around ~2500 sq ft and has a Telus gig speed connection.

I'm going to try and get the cabling to terminate in the basement, next to my modem. Does anyone have any cabinet recommendations?

minimum CAT7.

Fish all lines down to the basement ... into a central hub area ...
