[Home Depot] Kreg Straight Edge Guide-4 Ft $49.98

This is a warm deal if you're in the market for a straight edge guide for ripping sheet goods. Kreg released their straight edge guide not too long ago with their new generation of pocket hole kits.

I was interested in it when it first came out, but felt it was overpriced at MSRP of $70. It seems to be on sale at Home Depot and Amazon for $49.98.

Reviews are good but mixed, and this thing does not have rave review. I'm still a bit on the fence about whether this is any better than using a 4" box-level and some clamps which is my current strategy.

How does it compare to the Bora one?

It's a good question, but some quick googling doesn't reveal any direct comparisons between the two. I will say that basically these are metal guides with clamps on either end to hold it firm to the plywood. The Kreg does have plastic "wings" that help you measure the distance between your saw blade and guide which reviews indicate may be prone to breaking.

But at this price the Kreg is half the price of the Bora.

I know wood is pricey but you can make a jig from a sheet of plywood that works pretty well (4FT also seems a bit limiting but I guess it depends on what you intend to use it for):

Alternatively, you could make a more involved sled which you might be able to also repurpose to use as your router sled:

But you do get the full 8ft guide for that $88

In my experience, the Kreg Rip-Cut and this item, would solve most needs for around the same money as the Bora.

The Bora seems unnecessarily long, unless you're ripping 3/4 ply strips all day.

I want to build one but I’m concerned that I won’t make it straight

You can use the factory edge of MDF for your straight edge or angled steel/aluminum. If you want to double check the edge is straight throughout the entire jig, you can lock a combo square for the distance on either end of the jig (after you do your cut with the circular saw). You then run the square down the jig and see if it moves away from the edge at any point. If it doesn't, you should be good to go.
