Website description below
Praying Mantis are a "Great General Predator" in the garden. A fantastic educational tool for children. Can be hatched out in the garden or in a paper bag inside and then released in the garden or even in an aquarium or terrarium. They set up their own territory where they reside for the season, well camouflaged, but sometimes seen sunning on a leaf or in later summer flying to find a mate.
Latin Name: Tenodera aridifolia sinensis, the green or brown praying mantis
One egg case contains approximately 40 - 400 eggs that all hatch within about one hour. Babies disperse quickly throughout your garden leaving the egg case the same .
Mantis feed on fruit flies, gnats, aphids, flies, mosquitoes, beetles, moths, caterpillars and even grasshoppers - pretty well anything they can get into their mouth.
Hatching occurs in June when the weather is warm enough. Immediately dispersing and setting up their own territory
One egg case covers Approximately 90 sq. m. (1000 sq. ft.)
Mating occurs in the early fall. After mating an egg case is laid over winter for the following summer. The egg case is laid as a foam that hardens to a spongy material that tolerates freezing, thawing, snow and rain.
