Gen 5X is the relatively newer brushless line, as opposed to the older X4.

Octane is also brushless.

Brushless is better but for the weekend warrior, brushed is fine.

The $179 set is newer than this set?

Both sets are brand new in box of course. You could compare the performance specs for the drill and impact driver in each set as stated in the product details, to see if there's any significant difference in power or features. (rpm, in-lbs., etc.)

Tools without brushes are preferable because there are no brushes to wear out and need replacing, i.e. less repairs/maintenance.

Power tools with brushes are older technology.

It's a great lesson to learn in power tools.

If the $179 set (brushless) the drill is hammer drill then it would perfect.

I am going to return this old Gen5X set. Although it's cheap but I like the $179 built quality way more.

May I know would the $179 one the drill (non-hammer) about to drill concrete

I think they do have a brushless version labeled GEN5X as well, but it specifically says so on the box/product page
Here a pic of one of my Brushless Gen5X tools. It's part of the $125 multi-tool set from about 5 years old (impact driver, hammer drill, circular saw, angle grinder, etc.)

Brushless refers to the construct of the motor.

Motor comes in either brushed or brushless form. The 'brush' in older motor design refers to the electrical contact that passes electricity to the commutator (the actual centre part of a motor that forms the electric magnet...and turn). Brushed motors are energy inefficient because of this contact point...it rubs against the commutator as it's turning. This has friction and produces heat, also, brushes wears down over time, and require brush replacements.

Brushless motors on the other hand, has the electric magnet on the outside, and the perm magnets are placed with the centre rotor. This means the electric magnet doesn't need to spin, and so only stationary electrical contacts are needed. Hence 'brushless'.

Those who have played any R/C toys would know this, too... brush replacement is quite an often maintenance exercise.

some of the gen5x combo kits were brushless, and then rebranded to octane once the octane batteries were ready (they were late)

this kit is brushed. look at the photo where it says "Gen5x motor technology". fancy dancy words for NOT brushless.

Would rigid be better than ryobi? New home owner and would need to buy some tools soon.
