[Home Depot] Rinnai RU199iN Tankless Gas Hot Water Heater - $2,422.61 after Price Match - YMMV

Lowes currently has the Rinnai RU199iN gas tankless hot water heater on sale for $2,691.78.

https://www.lowes.ca/product/tankless-g ... -330690840

Same unit at HomeDepot is $2,950. I was able to price match and get the 10% discount through live chat. YMMV depending on the agent, this unit is not sold in store so they may only match the price since it is an online only item.

Just need to find someone in Ottawa to install this thing now...

Andrew Sheret in BC has it for $2487.03 for any Joe Blow. If you know the special handshake, (contractor pricing) you can get it cheaper.

what's stopping you from taking this link to HD and get 10% off that price? (2487.03 x 0.9 = 2238.33)
and if you can get the official quote for contractor pricing, they may even beat that.

From my experience with mini split HVAC people will not install what they do not buy from them.
If you find someone that does, chances are they will not give you warranty.
Do not by anything until you have installer lined up.

Yeah, and I can imagine it only gets worse getting someone to work with gas. We don't have NG in my area, are you allowed to self install with it? We only have propane available and nothing is really stopping you from working with it inside the house.

I went thru it with mini splits, I knew going into it noone would want to install it, but I tried a few places anyway for giggles, mostly no's, and a few yes's from guys I wouldn't want to touch it, in the end, tools for self install for two units + a spare unit for parts (because no warranty) was 1000s less than one unit installed from a hvac company.

Good find. I have the older model: Rinnai RUR98iN, same specs, made in Japan, running since Nov 2015, no issues at all.
I installed it myself using the Condensing 21" Horizontal Termination Kit. I see that sheret.com has all the required accessories.
Mine was expensive at that time because it's the model that includes the: Built-in circulation pump, Internal by-pass pipe for internal "recirculation", MC195T remote controller, Thermal Bypass Valve, and Isolation Valves.

I'm not sure if this one in the link above includes or not in the package the isolation valves or not (Webstone 44043PR 3/4-Inch IPS Isolator) - a must for any installation.

I installed mine myself, piece of cake. Other than gas. Gas hookup was something like $150 or $200

Any installers in the GTA? I'm happy to buy if there's someone licensed to do the work.

Worst case HD has an install service, can just use that.

I don't actually have any issues installing this myself, have installed plenty of these in the UK and then you just get the gas install certified. The code around these things in Canada (and even province to province) is what throws me.

Is this possible to do in Ontario? Assume for the gas hookup it's just a case of finding an HVAC person to do it?

Which code? Gas? Yes, of course it's possible to do it yourself. How far is the heater from the gas manifold or where you will be bringing the gas from? What are you planning to use - CSST? You will need a gas guy to sign off on your work. My gas technician does not accept any flexible pipes of any sort going through any walls. He almost exclusively does solid steel pipes. And to cut and thread those you need special tools, which I person don't own. So make sure whoever will be signing off on your work will be able to inspect it easily and is generally ok with how you will be doing it. For me, I got pretty much everything around the house, but for gas it's easier just to get my technician to do it. Inspection is about half the price of the hookup anyway, at least on a small job like this.

Any similar offer in Ontario? How much would it cost to install a gas tankless anyone know?

Anyone considering getting this (or any other tankless unit) should check to see if you have a 1" gas line going into your house from the gas meter. I have a tank and was looking to upgrade to a tankless, and all the companies I called verified that my existing 3/4" gas line is not large enough to supply a tankless unit. Gas line upgrade in my case would've costed me another $800 or so, so factor that into your install pricing.

Heres my problem, I live in an area that has hard water, I was told if I get the tankless water heater its life span would be cut in half because of the hard water, so I would need a water softener, but then I read all the disadvantages of a water softener (removes magnesium and calcium and adds sodium to water, effects on hair).
Another option is to just rent the tankless water heater, and after a couple of years just get it replaced. Im looking for a tankless water heater because its more efficient than my tank water heater right now.
Any advice?

Curious how much did you save on gas with tankless heater? Is it worth it?

Not much from what these guys say and way more money up front and more prone to failure

Tank water heaters are way cheaper, buy the cheapest of a model line as the main difference from what I have read regarding cost is the warranty, they are all pretty much built the same.

My gas water heater was the cheapest that HD sold and has been working great for 11 years, installed when I bought my house. Very basic installation, natural vent not power and since I am on a well with hard water was advised not to consider tankless as they don't work well with hard water or changing water pressure like a well system has.

I was told before that if I ever install a tankless. I will need to redo and replace the pipes. I am not sure how much installation will be. But for me sounds like a big job.

Are you a licensed technician of any trade?
