You want the screw holes vertical. A stud is not wide enough to hold more than two small screws or one larger screw across its edge; also the bracket will hold a lot more weight mounted vertically than horizontally. Think of how weight on the bracket will try to bend it downwards. Horizontally you've only got the bend resistance of the screws keeping the bracket straight, whereas vertically you've got the top screws resisting being pulled outwards (which is what a screw is designed to do) and the bottom ones resisting being pushed into the wall (assisted by the wall itself).
