Darker colour would obviously be better...less reflection in dark room.

I have a projector but just replaced it with a 70" TV for under $1,000. You can get even bigger for not much more $. The benefit of projector is much much smaller now with these huge low priced TVs. When I got my projector, a big TV was like 40".

TVs can be pretty big now but they are still far from 120-140" projector screens.

You need to be sitting a certain distance from the screen for that big a picture to be comfortable IMO...ie big basement with seats too far back.

I have an older projector so the throw is pretty long. To get that big a picture I'd have to go back a lot farther than I got it.

Right now the last time I used the projector was at a rental cottage [old bedsheet screen]. Nice to do a indoor movie night there where it's dark and you're looking for something to do besides feed the mosquitos/bugs outside.

Thanks for the shoutout.

The black colour I used on the ceiling and my front projection wall (around my screen, before I covered it up in black velvet) is called "Tricorn Black" by Sherwin Williams. Got it in a matte finish, does pretty well at absorbing scattered light, but having the black velvet certainly takes it up another level.

Is black the best option? How about dark grey or dark blue? Anything other than black?

In a year, TVs will be 100" for under $2k [if it isn't already that].

I recently heard about Samsung "the frame tv" and thought it was brilliant.

Projectors are in another league from TV's. I watch on a 150" screen from 10-11 feet away. 21:9 content is especially magnificent. No comfort issues.

If you want to maximize image quality the whole room should be black other than the screen. I am dual purpose rec room, so made some compromises

Go with the biggest screen that would fit your wall. Dont get too hung up on viewing distance and comfort.
I went with 135 inch screen in my basement. The ceiling is around 7.5 feet. I left around 18-20 inches from the floor and 6 inches from the top. And calculated that I coule fit in a 135 inch in that height.
Amazing experience. And mine is not even anywhere closer to @Repooc 's setup. Lol.

I measured it last night and 135” screen will fit on my wall. There will be about maybe 12”-16” space on the top and less on the bottom. The screen would be mounted just right under the windows level to accommodate 135” screen. Will this be an issue?

Also there is a bulkhead on one side which protruding more/lower than the ceiling surface where I will be mounting the projector. Do I need to get a projector mount that can extend lower to bring the projector level pass the bulkhead? See the picture below for the location of the bulkhead. The picture was taken from roughly the position where I will be hanging the projector which is about 14’-16’ from the screen.

Not sure what is on the other wall but the screen might be better in the other wall opposite the bulkhead. You can even hide the projector into that bulkhead with cables coming out back and hidden.

Is that the only window in basement. I am wondering if you could live with that window shut. This will allow you to take the screen a bit higher. The higher you can get the screen, the easier it will be on eyes.

Also, most projectors can shift the picture in Up/Down, left/Right direction. So I dont think you will need any special mount.

This is how mine looks like. I might have around 18-20 inches space at the bottom. This allowed me to add an Ikea TV stand which I use to keep AVR, Xbox etc.

Excuse the patches on the wall. I undertook the exercise of running the audio cables behind what was an already finished drywall. So I had to punch few small holes.

There are two more windows on the left side. I will be buying black out curtain or something that will close the windows.

Which projector you are using? What’s the distance from the projector to the screen?

I am thinking of getting 135” screen and Epson 3800 and I wonder if 15’ is enough throw distance to get 135”. 120” screen is also an option if things don’t work out.

I have Epson HC 4000 projector. My throw distance is roughly 18 feet. Based on this calculator, you can get a 135 inch image from 13 feet distance for the projector you are planning to get. So 15 feet gives you a little bit of comfort zone to adjust here and there.
