honda cr-v recall question

hello,

my cr-v was recalled due to the frame inspection, and dealer seized the car because it couldn't pass the safety reason. They gave 1 week of rental car and a cheque, can they do that by law? I use my car for everyday and I rarely have time to shop for a new one. so stressful....

Do you have anything in writing from the dealership for this?

If they gave you a cheque, it sounds like they bought the car from you. Did you sign your ownership paper to them?

They gave you a rental car you can use ... Is that not enough?
What is the cheque for?
Before you speak: THINK
T = is it True?
H = is it Helpful?
I = is it Inspiring?
N = is it Necessary?
K = is it Kind?

I haven't signed anything yet, only received a rental car so I can decide what to do with my wife.

I don't think the dealer is allowed to seize your car. But if the frame is rusted then the car shouldn't be on the road.

You can get the police involved about the dealer holding your car "hostage", but they might get the MTO involved who will side with the dealer. Then the vehicle will have its ownership changed to "unfit", and the license plates will be revoked until the frame damage is repaired and whole vehicle is inspected again.

make sense, it's just too sudden that I need to shop for a new vehicle.

Maybe you can get the rust fixed. But there are limits as to how much can be repaired. The damage might be too much.

A good, used CR-V is only like $5k anyways.

I am not sure what test was done but they hammered the frame and failed their safety code.

Yes. If the frame can be punctured by hand with a hammer or screwdriver, the metal is too rusty.

The limits have to do with the size of the rusted area, and where it is on the car. Repairs on certain areas of the frame are not allowed. At that point, the car cannot be fixed and be given a legitimate safety certificate.

Check below, looks like your vehicle didn't not pass the inspection and Honda (not dealership) will buy your car.... You can have a secondary inspection if you are not happy with decision.

This is the recall : http://wwwapps.tc.gc.ca/Saf-Sec-Sur/7/V ... archResult

Issue: On certain vehicles, the rear frame could rust. In extreme cases, this could result in a rear-trailing arm separating from the vehicle. This recall applies to vehicles originally sold or currently registered in areas of heavy road salt usage (Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland & Labrador). Safety Risk: A rear-trailing arm that separates could cause a loss of control and increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: The company will notify owners by mail. Owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer for an inspection of the rear frame stiffeners. If the vehicle passes the inspection, dealers will apply corrosion protection. For a vehicle that does not pass the inspection, Honda will repurchase the vehicle. In the event the repurchase is declined by an owner, a secondary inspection and body shop repair method may be possible.

I think getting a cheque from Honda would be better than getting CRV back with the risk that you could lose control and crash if the trailing arm fails.

The timing might suck, but getting injured if your vehicle fails would be worse.

toyota (i think) did it on 1998-2002 models i believe..my years may be wrong but its was for similar issue...I think it was tacoma...they gave something like 1.5 black book value...honda is taking mileage into consideration and giving 1.25 wholesale value i believe on this recall...my friend had his in yesterday..it passed...but he also had free rebuild last year because of the other issue discussed in another thread about the motor.

I’m surprised OP still wants to keep driving a car that has rotted beyond repair.

Did Honda give you fair value for your car? Don’t know why people come looking for advice with as little detail as possible.

Mine is going in for inspection tommorow. They say it takes all day. Hopefully it's ok. Heard buyback is wholesale plus 15% tax plus 15% bonus. But don't quote me on that one.

Dude, they're saving your life. Why do you want your piece of junk that will cause you to crash and die.
