Honda Element with a knock sound?

Hi there,

Well, since everyone almost knows me doing my Costco rounds, I was looking for a Honda Element. I managed to find one, overall good condition, 2008, automatic, asking for 8000$, 197000 KM. One owner, well maintain. However, the listing state there is some noise coming from the engine (knocking I presume) but it drives fine with no issue. I'm no mechanic, but knocking isn't a good sign, no?

Love the car, but I worried this might be just another money pit. I shouldn't expect anything, after all, it's 14 years old and it will need some work, but I want to turn it into a camper and stuff for road trips.

Should I take the risk or keep looking?

Can you get an audio recording?

Good news is that this engine is cheap to replace and are generally very reliable. Just labour cost.

No timing belt on those but chain guide wear is unlikely at only 190km unless it’s really abused and no oil changes

I was looking for a 4wd manual version for a winter beater but after reading up on the 4wd weakness (drive shaft/CV) I gave up on the idea.

Older model Honda's always have issue with CV boots. Their aircond compressor also prone to failure.

if the engine is knocking there are tons of low km engines from japan cost about 1000-1300 for the engine and about 1000-1300 for labour if the engine does fail on you
