How do you make sure when you switch phone providers the retention department call you back?

As the title says, how do you make sure when you switch phone providers the retention department call you back?

Specifically speaking, do you ask the 2nd provider to switch your account? Or you call the first provider asking them to move you to 2nd provider?

My guess is the latter would result in having them to call you back and win you back.

I did the first, asking the 2nd provider to move me, and I never heard back from the 1st provider. I was a customer for 10 years, makes think I did the right choice.

Why can't you phone the retention dept. when your contract is coming due?

Sure there are, even with bare bones phone services, my Freedom Mobile prepaid was supposed to go up from $19 to $24 after the first year. I called as the year-end was approaching and asked if they could extend it. They did.

This

Lol to those who only negotiate contracts based on info that the other side provides …
Be it bundling for Telecom Agreements, Insurances, or Banking Fees (including Annual CC Fees & Interest Rates)
Sure miss out on a lot of opportunities in life to save money

Retention is a BIG DEAL in all these 3 industries (and many others)
As it costs way more to find new Customers
Than it does to retain old ones

This knowledge is power

Ask … and you’ll be surprised how much you can save

Not enough people bother to ask
They just assume what they are being told is all there is available

if you're talking about winback, just make sure your phone number and email were properly up to date on your account after you cancel. i've had luck with telus, bell and fido this way. i'd either get a call or an email telling me to call a specific number.

Of course. For some reason my mind went to traditional phone service.

I did, they offered me $5 off my plan if I get a family member/friend to join. Sh*tty deal overall. I changed provider after that.

You can't do that because it's not possible. How could TELUS move you to Rogers or vice versa? If you were trying for a winback deal, all you had to do was port out to another provide (not a sub brand) and hope you get a call. And if you didn't, there's nothing stopping you from calling your old provider and getting in touch with the winback department to see what their current offers are.

Obviously not a cell carrier, but I tried that with Shaw for internet.
Apparently retentions didn't exist and they were the last line of defense.

Then retentions called me and gave me a better deal.

I kind of wonder if the first rep was trying to scoop the deal for commission or something.
Do you not have anything else to do rather than argue with strangers on the internet
Nope. That's why I'm on the internet arguing with strangers. If I had anything better to do I'd probably be doing it.

I'm not entirely sure what you're trying to say but I asked Bell to move me to them.

Edit:
I'll just quote what I said to the other commentator too:

I tried to extend a promo at Virgin (internet), they said NO. I said that I was also a mobile customer, they said NO.

I emailed Koodo to call me back for retention after I left... crickets. I was with them since we had old brick Blackberry not-so-smart-phones.

I think you are making the assumption that they care that much to slit their own throat to get you back. During prescribed sales a lot of the companies just put out identical deals, I think they've wised up to get together and each company rip us off as much as they can to maximize profits, people will leave and others will take their place. It's a wash, no?

If you want to talk to a certain company's retention dept, call them and ask. I did, not much budging. I take it they don't care anymore as 5000 leave and 5000 sign up. Either way they are making money. People expecting each company to cut each other's throat and you'll eventually get 25GB for $25 isn't realistic.

Loyalty means nothing these days. New customers get all the deals. When a forever loyal customer calls in to get the same (or similar) promotion, it's like pulling teeth. They literally won't budge, but they're more than happy to give excellent retention promos to the customer who's only been with them 1-2yrs, but if you're a forever customer like 10+ yrs, eat dirt.
Tis banana is IRIE 😎

10% off is cold, 50% off is warm, 75% off is hot, but FREE IS RFD!

You don't. Because each provider has different internal targets for retentions that vary from time to time.

You call retentions, don't count on them calling you.

Hey I was with them since the blackberry keyboard phones and I'm on the same too, I guess, when it comes to them not budging on their price, I just thought perhaps I did something wrong because there are a lot of people reporting some good deals.

Nevertheless I'm okay where I am right now.
