How does a bypass humidifier work?

Does the humidifier work even if no hot air is circulating? Reason I ask is we have a HRV and was hoping that the humidifier would still turn on even if no heat is sensed? The Wait and Honeywell models I was looking at didn't mention anything. The house is fairly insulated so don't want to waste money if humidifier only turns on when heat is called.

You are defeating the purpose of the HRV if you run a humidifier at the same time. The HRV turns on when there is a high level of humidity in the house or activated manually after a shower or cooking to rid the house of this excess moisture and bring in drier air from outside. You might as well just turn off your HRV and circulate the excess moisture around the house with you furnace fan.

Instead of an HRV you should have an ERV which returns some of the moisture to the house.
