How to get around signing-up for an account without providing cell #?

A lot of social media sites are requiring a cell/mobile # to create an account. You can't even use a fake # because it sends a verification text. Is there a way to get around this (e.g. be able to get a verification code some other way)? I already get enough telemarketer calls, don't want to increase it by providing my # unnecessarily ...it's just another way for them to collect more info about you.

Thanks. Trying to sign-up for TextNow but keep "unknown error" when I pick "continue with google" - tried 2 different browsers. It's too bad they don't let you sign=up with just an email - they force you to use Google, Facebook or Apple.

OP, you could try this free app of Fongo's (there's others I'm sure) - https://www.fongo.com/fongomobile/ and get a new number with that. The app does receive text messages with no charge, but I've noticed not 100% of the ones that a non-app would get. Also you can try https://www.burnerapp.com/ at least as a trial (lots of others but that is one of the more popular) and if you need to get enough verification texts after that, the monthly cost might be worth it.

Unfortunately I think there's no trial for either of these - only a paid subscription. Thanks though!!

No, that's not true. The Fongo App is free (I've never paid for it in years, only premium features are for-pay):
Our FREE Canada Wide Calling & Texting App
Get Fongo Mobile, our FREE Canada wide calling app with tons of great free features. Fongo Mobile comes with a real phone number! Our app allows you to call all of Canada for Free (excludes Territories). You get unlimited text and media messaging to all Fongo users.

And Burner App offers:
Burner: 7-Day Free Phone Number Trial

The trial includes (best I can see) 20 minutes of talk time and 40 text messages (sometimes I saw 60 quoted, regardless, should be much higher if you're just using it for sign-up/initial use verification) based on its app store listings (either platform).

This article might also be helpful, you can trial some of the others: https://www.pcmag.com/how-to/burner-acc ... smartphone
