How much do you pay to prune shrubs?

I have a pretty messy bush in my backyard right about now.

I bought a house with an established privacy hedge between me and my backdoor neighbors, that's about 70ft long. Its easy to tell that it hasnt been maintained in the past few years, so I got a company to come out and they gave me a $400 quote.
I have no clue how much such a job should cost, I want to get a few more estimates of course, however getting an estimate proves more difficult than I thought since it is prime season for them.

I understand that trimming an overgrown hedge will cost more than just an annual trim but how much do you guys pay for your hedge trimming needs?

I love in the south shore of Montreal,

$400 for trimming 70 ft of hedge sounds like a good price, especially if it is scruffy and has not been trimmed and shaped for a long time.
Make sure they take the cuttings away or make sure your garbage people will take them (not all cities will)

Hard to compare other peoples experience as it also depends on how high they are now and how much trimming you want to do. $400 is not a lot for someone to just show up and do any work.

As Pete_Coach said, make sure they take cuttings away.
$1 saved is like $2 earned...remember that!

I paid $500 to have 2 big trees pruned so seems pretty reasonable as shrubs of that nature are actually trees. If you're not in a rush, just wait until you have can get a few more quotes but go with someone who comes highly recommended as well, not just low price. You don't want some numbnut with no clue or insurance hacking away at it- they may either damage your property/shrubs or themselves if they don't know what they're doing.
