How much insurance discount with MTO certificate but 30 years of age?

I see a lot of positive responses and this forum seems to be very active so I figured I should try and ask a question.

Just to give some context, I am over 32 years of age and I got my G1 license 5 years ago. I decided to get my G2 license since my G1 is about to expire. I know its embarrassing coz I am old but I live in Toronto. I find that having a car is expensive.

So the driving school I am currently attending is not that great. My instructor doesn't seem to care too much about the student and I always get half-baked lessons. He is very unprofessional and I really just want to forget about this school and leave. I later find out that I have to pay $45 just for him to process the MTO certificate which I find very money hungry since I already paid $685 for the whole course. I kind of figured it's already included in the package since most schools include this fee.

The final straw that had me turned off is that after taking the 9th hour of the in-car lesson, he had told me that I may not continue with the course and will not receive the MTO certificate. I asked why and he said I am already passed the 12 month time frame that I needed to finish the course. It did not make any sense to me since every driver training in Ontario is extended until further notice due to the pandemic. I decided to reach out to MTO via email and I was right and I sent the email to him and he said I can finish the course.

I always give people the benefit of the doubt but based on his attitude and how he treats his students, I dont think I can no longer trust this guy to do the right thing and process my MTO certificate. I tried to be friendly to him and took his demeaning remarks during lessons. I went through 9 lessons of it and I can no longer take it since I am diagnosed with anxiety. It will just stress me out even more and its not healthy.

My question is, how much discount will I get if I do get the MTO certificate? according to him the most I can get is 5% since I am over 30 years of age and 10-15% only applies to teenagers since theyre considered as high risk. Since I dont trust this guy is this true?

He charges $60 per lesson and I already have 9 hours in so I got $540 worth of lessons. I just chuck the remaining $145 for the in-class lesson which I actually learn something.

Thanks in adnce.

LOL I love how non insurance professionals always seem to know the discount that one would receive or not receive ...

Insurance companies start rating you at the G2 lic date. So, if you are lic'd less than 3 years, then most companies would advance you to what would be considered a 3 star driver. You will remain at the 3 star level until you completed 3 full years lic'd. If you have already reached 3 years driving, then there is no benefit to taking this course. If you have only been lic'd under 3 years, then it would benefit you for the amount of time it takes you to reach the 3 year level. There is no percentage. This can be applied to a new driver regardless of your age. You will also receive a "graduated lic" discount. This discount is applied for 1 year only when you advance from the G1 to the G2 then again when you advance from G2 to G. Again, only for 1 year.

You're correct to not "trust" this guy... he is full of hot air giving you the gears as to what degree of discount or benefit driving school will give you.

Keep in mind the drivers school must be a gov't approved one in order to get the drivers training discount. You can check the gov't website to see if this "guy" is listed there as an approved school.

Wow thats how much it cost these days eh…
I got my driver’s education the most old skool way.
Back when they use to tape flyers to telephone poles and bus stop poles. They leave a little flap with a phone number you can rip off to call them.

$349.99 for 10 lessons. Ghetto ass school and old ass busted up looking car. But the guy was actually a good teacher.

This was 2008ish actually loll

If you have no driving history (in Ontario), even the $650ish generally still pays for itself over 3 years? My GF has her G1, early 30s, and wants to take the driving training course.. Seems pricy but honestly if it saves even $100-$200 a year on insurance the first few years and keeps her happy its money well spent lol.

The other benefit that doesn't apply to OP is being able to take the test early.

All your savings are being burnt on that driving school Grinning Face With Smiling Eyes. Big discounts with certificate are myth, don't even worry about it, marketing scam by driving schools to attract more students.
