BC, my last hydro bill was $800 tax included.

I have all electric water, an electric heat pump (that helps mind you), and two suites that are electric baseboard only.
Only gas is the range and fireplace.

49$ per month on average. 1000 sq ft condo, 2nd floor (of 3 total) near downtown Montreal. Recent build (2007) and well insulated, I live alone. My highest bills would be January and July/August (depending on when I take vacations (+/- A/C)) and are around 65$.

For what it's worth, the average 1500-2000 square foot home in the GTA should have a year round average hydro bill of ~$120-140 every two months. The number of people in a household like 2 vs 4 doesn't make a huge difference. If you're paying significantly more, like say greater than $160 bi-monthly, then you may want to look into things.

Some things to consider:
- Are you locked into a contract that is ripping you off? Like those salespeople that go door to door asking to see your hydro bill and then signing you up to a contract.
- Is your heating or air conditioning on most of the time?
- You may want to look into switching to energy efficient devices like CFL or LED bulbs, a newer fridge, a newer HDTV.
- Obviously the larger your house the greater the likelihood of having a higher hydro bill.
- Your utilities bills are a very easy way to save money if you shop around, consume efficiently and aren't wasteful. There's potentially thousands of dollars over the lifetime that you're living at that residence that you could be saving.

I would agree, but there are some high power consumers that can significantly bump this up.

- 1500 watt heater - 50$ per month
- modern central AC - 50-75$ per month
- dehumidifier - 40$ per month
- any electric heating (tile heating in bathroom or baseboard also brings the price up)

You mention that you are using 9000kw per billing period??? Around here never exceeds 900-1000kw, regardless of what is running.

I agree up to a point, but the total electricity consumption of many of the most energy-intensive appliances in the house (dishwasher, clothes washer and dryer, hot water heater if electric, etc.) scales with the number of people in the house. A typical family of four generates a LOT of laundry and dirty dishes.

Man, Canada is a rip off. I remember when we lived in the USA, we would pay $180 for 3 months of power and water with a/c's running 24/7 on HIGH and electric appliances including hot water. Washer and dryer included. Just one more thing we get ripped off on up here. Canada may be home, but the USA is looking more and more inviting by the week.

If you plan to live in the same house for 05 or more years . below will help you tremendously
1. Change your Electric dryer to gas dryer
2. Change your Electric stove to gas stove
3. Assumption : You already have a Forced Air Furnace that runs on gas .
Last but not least : Make changes in your time table of drying , washing e.t.c if you are doing it in peak times . Weekend / late night is the best time to do laundry in off peak hours as electicity has different charges in off peak hours ( unlike gas )

Great advice! Havent thought about using the laundry during off-peak hours! Going to print of the chart so the fam can also use it as a guideline.

Any tips on reducing water bill? Im finding it a bit high even though its winter and no lawn watering?

Edit: Those in the durham region here's the chart: http://www.ontarioenergyboard.ca/OEB/_D ... Winter.pdf

Do you have a pass through humidifier? They waste a lot of water.

Generally big shower heads are the culprits . See if you can change to energy saving small heads . Secondly you need to time your shower time .
Use dishwasher only when full and same applies to washing machine .
I also replaced my Old toilets which utilized 6g. I bought the ones which flushes less water and use siphon technology .
All these little changes will make a differene in your water bill .

Bill depends on the size of place. ! My uncle pays 400 to 500, because he has a huggge place. 2000 sq ft+ 5 bedrooms. I got a small condo and I pay 100 for 2.5 months :) ...so it depends, also on how much you crank it up :)

I think his bills are still pretty high. We're in a 3200sq 5 bedroom home with 5 people and our bills are approx $150 every other month.

150? lol...maybe I miscalculate his building size...it is half a block long...gas heated for stove, furnace, water heater... $150 for every other month is dirt cheap...I pay 100 for my condo and I'm hardly ever there...where is your building? sounds really exaggerated $150 every 2 months... lol...that is like 75 a month...there is a base fee for hydro even if you don't use anything...comes out to 1 dollar a day... so at least 30 dollars a month...can you post your bill? Just strike out the names and account and stuff...lol

Nope not unusual if you read other's posts...it's pretty average. But since you asked for actual bill, here it is from last month. Our stove/walloven/dryer are electric.

We're in Ajax, which has pretty much the same electricity rate as Toronto.

Removed bill photo, since it was for stt55pot.
