You need to have multiple posts in order for private messages to work.
Start posting / discussing and it will activate for you.
I believe I read the number is two but I haven't found the details from the site regarding that.

Thanks for the info! I thought it would activate after my first post, but I still didn't see any way to send private messages. I didn't realize it would require multiple posts.
