How to temporarily disable a car?

How do you temporarily disable a car?

Example... Theoretically!!! No changing of the scenario allowed...

You have a public art display that involves a car that is open for people to go in and out of.
The public will have the key.
But you want to make sure that people can't drive the car away... Only to be able to open and lock the doors to go in and out of.

Disconnect the battery.

There’s a huge liability risk if the car isn’t 100% safe for public access

For example, a kid tries to turn over the engine while his buddy is leaning over the engine bay. The buddy clothes gets tangled in the engine pulleys, pulling him in

If you still need the keyfob to work the remote locks, then you could disconnect the starter lead from the battery, or pull a critical fuse.

If its a vehicle with antitheft, chips in keys etc... Just goto your local hardware store and copy key.

Key will let you open door, but won't start vehicle.

Remove fuses on things that you don't want people to turn on/off.
With lights/radio/accessories running, eventually the battery will be drained....

Remove the battery altogether?

What do you mean by the 'the public will have the key'? The key will just be there for anyone to take? What's to stop anyone from just walking away with the key? Then nobody will be able to use the car, including you. (yes yes you probably have another key, but could be a hassle)

Why would the public has the key?

Pull starter relay, and fuses as mentioned. I wouldn't disconnect the battery if it's a newer car, the relearn process can be a pain in the butt depends on make.

It used to be non-chipped key will still start the engine, but will shut down after a short bit. Not sure how it is now.

Remove the starter relay and put it in your pocket and reinstall when you want to start again. I'd suggest also pulling fuel pump relay that so if someone decided to leave key in on position it wouldn't affect the pump.

If the car uses an immobilizer, use a key with no chip or a chip that hasn't been programmed to start it.

Pull the fuel pump, starter and ECU fuses.

Or 4 Wheel boots.

Others already mentioned, but disconnect and remove the battery is the easiest way. That way even if they pop the hood, they can't drive away. If you want to be extra careful, remove the starter fuse.

Remove the battery and/or pull critical fuses.

I wonder if OP is trying to figure how they do it at the auto show, so he can enable the car and steal it?

Remove the steering wheel:)

Siphon out all gas:)

Put big boulders/obstacles in front and back.

Large chain to keep in place.

Hire a cop as that seems norm in GTA.

Remove battery if older car... newer cars have alot of electronics so need to be extra careful.

July 13, 2017 to October 25, 2018: BOC raised rates 5 times and MCAP raised its prime rate next day each time.

2020: BOC dropped rates 3 times and MCAP waited and waited to drop its prime rate to include all 3 drops.

Even if you take out the battery, there is nothing stopping a thief from installing another battery and driving off with the car. I guess a thief could also just tow the car away. I suppose you would have to think about those scenarios. You probably would need to ask a mechanic though.
