How to use data if on a no data plan?

My father is using a $20 Fido plan that doesn't include data. How can he use data to surf the web? Or is it not even possible to use data if you plan doesn't include data?

Data pass
http://www.fido.ca/web/content/datacata ... ata_passes

Duration
Phones and Smartphones
Data Day pass (24 hours) $1 20 MB
Data Week pass (168 hours)$5 100 MB
Data Month pass (31 days) $10 200MB

So better use wifi
Or sign for some data plan

I thought the rate would match what you would pay if you are on a data plan and you use over the limit. You sure I will pay the same rate as a data pass?

I don't think that data will work at all unless you specifically have a plan that has provision for data (either pay per use,a predetermined amount, or add-on).

Thats like saying pay as you go customers are charged the same as someone on a plan
If you have no Data plan !! prepare to pay whatever they choose to charge you
I would start by calling the provider and it get from the horses mouth

It could be worse. For example Telus prepaid data is $2 per MB if you don't have any data plan/add-on. You really need to find out from your provider before trying it.

$30 for 1GB data is not too bad for pay-per-use (no data plan) ... 3 cents per kilobyte would be $30,000 per GB !! (Telus $2 per MB would be $2000 per GB.)

It depends what you want to use data for. If you're just sending and receiving email, notifications and chat messages, then you'll probably use only a few megabytes per day, and one of the cheap add-ons is fine. If you're streaming video, that's another matter entirely - you would need a sensible plan (not that streaming video to a cell phone on mobile data could be called sensible!).

This was a bunch of years ago but a friend of mine had a bill where she was billed $56/MB by Bell.
Luckily pay per use rates are less now but they're still ridiculous.
Don't do it.

A few years ago, I had my phone setup to not allow data. An update to an app flipped the switch without me knowing. In one day, I accumulated $170 of charges at Telus. Why? Because C-SIP Simple kept polling on data. I called them to inquire what had happened. They reversed the charge, and setup my account so that even if my phone has data access, their configuration would stop it.Lesson leaned. Bullet dodged.

Why don't you call your dad's provider and ask? You ask here and you get wrong information, what are you going to do? Call Fido and complain that you were given wrong info on RFD and want an adjustment?

Quite a bit of running around.
Get him a dual sim card phone and use his Fido plan just for talk/text.
Get him a Tbytel prepaid data SIM of $100 for 20 Gb a year. It may look a lot but with LTE it goes fast.
I recall Fido has some grandfathered great plan for that he does not want to leave. That appears to the only way to keep it
Daniel

Fido $0 3Gb LTE + overage plan until Feb 2019
