HP Monitor Randomly Goes Black

My HP 27fw monitor randomly goes black, especially with Chrome. It lasts a millisecond and then comes back. This all started when I updated my 256 Crucial ssd with a Samsung 500 with a clean Windows install. My desktop also has a Nvidia GTX 950 card. Drivers appear fine, but did not uninstall.

Frankly, I have not been happy with the Samsung. My computer is noticeably slower (i5 6400 and 16gb ram) and takes longer to load programs.

No. I've been using hdmi. Perhaps I could try swapping in a new hdmi cable first.

Do people update their ssd firmware? Is this also something I should do, esp since I have the newer 870, not the 860? Is there any danger to this process?

The most common warning with firmware updates is if it gets interrupted part way (power outage, Windows crash, etc.) it could make the drive inaccessible but in most cases, it shouldn't cause issues.
You should still have backups of your data regardless.

Most firmware updates would have some kind of release notes, stating what they fixed.
I can't find them on the samsung site but it might show them just before update in Samsung Magician.

You say the screen blanks especially in Chrome, which means you've seen it happen outside Chrome?
I know Chrome has a glitch when hardware acceleration was enabled. Extensions can also cause it to do that.
But that only affected Chrome.

I also had a Dell monitor that did that and the cause seems to be related to the built-in audio. Disabling the monitor's audio device in sound settings seems to fix it.

I had an HP monitor that did the same thing (would actually power off to a black screen, then power back on) and it ended up being the power supply for it. Does it have a separate power cube on the cable? Mine got worse and worse till it didn't power up anymore.

I swapped out the cable and I will monitor the situation. I’ve had this monitor a year with no issues until I swapped the ssd. I will examine the power box to see if it is excessively warm, and it does not have its own speakers/audio.

It happens most when I exit Chrome.

Are you using the nvidia drivers from Windows update, or did you download directly from nvidia website?

Try downloading the latest installer.
During the install, select "Custom (Advanced)" install option and check the box "Perform a clean installation".
I'd also uncheck Geforce Experience unless you want that software.

Would you uninstall windows drivers first?

It doesn't hurt to, although a reinstall should just replace the driver and clean install resets the driver settings.

With the new hdmi cable the blackouts are less frequent, but still there.

You cannot uncheck GeForce Experience. It is grayed out.

I also wonder how much has to do with Chrome. It happens most frequently when I close a tab or Chrome altogether.

When you say blackout, what does that mean? Does the monitor switch to "no cable connected", or does the power seem to go off on it, or does everything stay the same, but just the output vanishes? If this happens regularly, I would advise, using an Ubuntu Live CD for a day, just to rule out Windows/Software issues. It comes with a browser etc, so most things should work.

I had a similar issue with the screen doing that. Turned out that the HDMI cable with the DVI adapter that I was using was the problem. Replaced the cable and have had no issues since.

Also check the refresh rate, as sometimes the drivers set the rate to auto and it can cause issues. Just set it to 60 Hz.

If Geforce Experience is already installed, I guess it won't let you uncheck and would require an uninstall.
That or it doesn't support your card and can't be installed.
I just leave it out because I don't use its features and it caused issues in the past due to a bug.

If Chrome is having an issue, only Chrome would be affected, meaning your taskbar, start menu, and other programs would still appear.
If everything goes black, then it could be something else.

Make sure both ends of the HDMI cable are firmly plugged in, since HDMI doesn't have a latch and can come loose.

It could also be a failing monitor, as previously mentioned.

Another possibility is your graphics card going bad.

I used my desktop yesterday with Edge and Firefox while also using Outlook. No blackouts. Will go back to Chrome and see if problem returns.

Hhmm. Used Chrome again for 15 minutes and back to blackouts.

That is starting to sound like a Video Card issue, possibly even Driver related. I wonder if Chrome is using some sort of Hardware Acceleration that is causing this. I would suggest use DDU to fully remove all traces of your old drivers and then re-installing the latest ones, just to rule that out
