Hydro Dues for Before Occupancy period

My suggestion would be to follow your lawyer's instruction on title insurance. In hindsight, your lawyer should have done property DD on unpaid utilities but it's probably not easy to spot since it was not under previous owner's name.

If the bills aren't in your name, then is it not possible to just return them? Mark the envelopes return to sender and let them deal with the unpaid dues

No utility provider tracks unpaid bills based on the property address not the owner's name. The unpaid balance will always be tagged with this property address. My suggestion would be paying this balance first before it gets charged with interest and late penalties and then sort it out with your lawyer.

I don’t know if Hydro has a similar process, but we had the same issue arise with Enbridge for our gas bill. They told us to have our lawyer fax documentation that showed the closing date and they would take it from there. Never heard anything further from them. We took the opportunity to instruct our lawyer to send a letter to the previous owner telling them to close any and all outstanding accounts they had associated with the property and that we would pursue them for any unpaid balances, if they failed to do so.
