Identity Theft?

Few years back I had to pay back to CRA (Canada Revenue Agency) about $800 bcause they said you have to since it was issued to me (i never got it) under the ontario child fund, they told me there was a diffrrent address on my file where money went. I never heard of that address. I suffer mental challenges, I did not know how to fight that, I paid them. Call it $800 loss for no reason. (I guess i didnt know a site like this where you could get suggestion). Now, my wife's credit card statements have been going to kind of same adress in ontario. My wife came to manitoba and never ever lived in ontario. Could I open my previous case of that $800 with CRA, and say hey I was not mentally ready to fight this at that time, but now I want to tell you that it was unfair to me?

And how do I protect that "ontario address" showing up on mine and my wife's credit reports and banking statemnets etc.

Please help with suggestions,

Thanks.

Given your challenges I dont think anyone on an internet forum can guide you through this. You definitely need a close friend or family member to help you get in touch with the right people (accountant, lawyer etc.).

Call the credit bureau and confirm that the personal info for you and your wife is correct.

Once the information is correct, place a credit alert on both files. This should ensure that credit issuers will contact you before any changes or new accounts can be implemented.

At the same time, you need to phone your CC issuer and ask why the address was changed to Ontario, and have it changed to the proper address.

This should help avoid future surprises such as the one you are experiencing.

OP, I think taxpayers are able to seek reassessment of taxes up to 7 years prior with relative ease. So, if new information comes to light that renders past assessments inaccurate, the CRA will look at the new information.

The CRA normally pays child benefits to the mother. Is the OP also female?

the OP said 'My wife came to manitoba and never ever lived in ontario.' My guess is that the wife was/is a new Canadian resident. So when the Ont. child payment was paid, he was a single parent.
