If you cancel a Scotia card do you lose the points?

I'm a little confused on how Scotia's scene+ stuff works.

If I cancel the passport card do I lose the points? Under the old program you'd transfer the points or use it before cancelling.

Or are the points tied to the scene account#?

P.s it's really lame how Scotia gives you one annual free waiver per 2-3? years. I've had the momentum visa for years now, and pay the annual fee because it's a good match for me, but apparently that makes me ineligible for the fyf on the passport. They said if I cancel the card now, they'll refund the fee so I can't use the points for travel like I originally intended.

You should be able to transfer the points to the debit card. Also, since it's possible to hold just a scene loyalty points card, you could hold the scene points there, but they'll likely eventually expire if left unused for too long.

You earn Scene+ points, they are pooled under a single Scene+ account - there is no transferring to the debt card. From the FAQ:

Your Scene+ account may be closed if you don’t use your Scene+ Membership Card to earn, redeem or complete any other reward transaction activity in more than 24 consecutive months.

However, one exception is that if you have a Scene+ Scotiabank Product, your Scene+ points will not expire as long as your Scotiabank product that is eligible for the Scene+ program remains open.

You’ll be provided with notice in advance if your account is ever at risk of being closed.

So, Scotia clearly tracks which card earned the points, but there shouldn't be any risk in cancelling that passport card?

Based on current policy I would expect it to be fine to cancel it.

Canceled the card.
Scotia said I'd lose all my points, but looks like it's been transferred. Hopefully it stays this way and I don't lose them.

Hi!
I’m curious about same. Did you end up losing those scene points or they were kept under your Sceneplus membership?

You are unlikely to get a reply from the original poster since the person hasn't accessed RFD in over 4 years (approaching 5 years) as they were last seen Jun 19, 2020 2:56 PM

That being said, as @titaniumtux mentioned, you won't lose the points by closing the Scene+ credit card provided that you don't leave them unused for 24 months after canceling your Scene+ affiliated credit card.

You do lose the Scene+ points due to inactivity. I don't have a Scene+ Visa card and I've lost my Scene+ points before when I used to collect them at Cineplex theatres and then stopped going and when I checked my balance after a few years, it was 0.

Last seen hasn’t worked in a long time.
That poster actually posted in Nov/23, but yeah, still unlikely to get a reply.

Thanks. I can't/didn't see the Nov/2023 but do see Mar/2022 in this very thread so not sure why the last posted shows June/2020.

Like others have mentioned above, Scene+ points live in your Scene+ account and therefore cancelling your Scene+ credit card from Scotiabank won't have any impact on your points, they will live forever (until you redeem them) in your Scene+ account.

The Momentum cash back credit cards are a different story however. Cash back is paid out yearly on your November statement, if you cancel or product switch your card prior to the November statement, all accumulated cash back is forfeited.

I used to have both the Scotiabank Passport VISA Infinite and the SCENE+ VISA and when I signed up for those cards, I was automatically a member of the SCENE+ program (that was back in 2018 when there two different reards programs, Scotia Rewards and SCENE Respectively).

Later on, I had applied for the no annual fee version of the Scotia AMEX and subsequently cancelled both of those VISA Cards. The cancellation of the cards (other than the no annual fee version of the Scotia AMEX) - did not have an effect with my points.

Scene+ points don't live forever; they expire after 24 months of inactivity.

The other problem is that if you don't have a credit card that severely limits the good redemptions. With a credit card the points are basically 1% cashback because they can be redeemed against any "travel" charge in going back pretty far. Without it I think you have to actually buy movie tickets or deal with travel tickets through their portal to get a comparable value. I don't see a point in hoarding these points though. There's no better value redemption if you have a lot of them and they don't seem to do any periodic redemption sales. So why not liquidate them for cashback as quickly as you earn them or at least before you cancel the credit card?
