I wonder how they can afford it?

Yeah really. They're the best image host I've seen.
Anonymous uploads, direct links to files, decent API.

It's been my favourite image hosting site since launching in 2009.
I love RFD! :)

Smart move. They can afford it because data is becoming cheaper to store and imgur is a huge community as well which has advertisements for the main image pages with comments. Hopefully they will last a while.

They have an Imgur community as well as reddit traffic. They can afford it lol
Uh, yeah, I'd like to speak to a Mr. Tabooger, first name Ollie.

Do you get Pro automatically on your account or do you have to press something?

With direct linking they see zero advertising revenue.
Traffic doesn't mean profit. If anything traffic costs them money.

EDIT: Reddit (for the most part) costs them money too since most images are direct links.
Occasionally you'll get an album which does have advertising revenue.

I used to use Imageshack for the same purpose a few years ago - I think a lot of people did. Then they went to a paid service where they are charging $3.99/month for a basic account now.

I was really happy to see Imgur pick up the load with free basic accounts. But I still wonder where their revenue comes from. Neither we users nor the sites where we post links to their images are paying them. Maybe it's being operated by the NSA so they can see everyone's images!

I saw their traffic numbers back in the day when they used to publish it. Even I was astonished. I remember something like 3-4 gbps constant.
I can get some pretty cheap bandwidth but even that is a fair chunk of change. Not to mention the hardware to support that kind of throughput.

Yep, the whatsapp model :) keep the ship afloat until someone sweeps in with a better way to monetize. Or with borrowed capital and an agenda.
