Incentives for posting deals

Yellowpages should pay people for posting deals. Give more for the popularity of the deal to incentivize people to share.

Also, winners of RFD contests should be posted for everyone to see and not disappear. Transparency is key for a trustworthy contest.

Hi VISITOR! It's been a few years since we were owned by Yellow Pages. We're now a part of the VerticalScope family.

Back to your main question, we're always looking for new ways to incentivize members to share deals. Most do it just for the benefit of the RFD community, but I agree that we would certainly get more deals if we did offer more incentives to members who share deals (beyond internet points that is).

More recently we started a monthly top deals contest where we send out gift cards to deal posters. In regards to the transparency of where the gift cards are going, we always post who gets them (both deal posters and contest winners) as a reply within each thread. Sometimes this process can take up to 3-4 weeks after it ends, but we always post it. For example you can see the list from February's contest in the last post here.

RFD swag for posts since up-votes will probably be abused.

Just let people cash out earned upvotes from "hot deal". One upvote = 1 Canadian dollar

The RFD t-shirts! I still have one but it's starting to show it's age.

RFD Xbox design lab controller, I've mocked up a few designs before, I'll have to take some screenshots.

RFD Yeti? I know these are overdone but hey why not.

A lot of the fun old-time RFD members, who posted a lot of great deals, and made the community freewheeling and enjoyable, have moved on now.

What is it that caused them to leave?
Well, I don't want to get the thread locked. I also learned that complaining really vocally doesn't do anything on here.
Not posting deals is really the only effective way of providing criticism to this site. Long-time staff and community members probably know what I'm talking about.

I don't necessarily think it's a bad thing though. It's a natural evolution in a community. We certainly want to keep everyone here, but nostalgia might actually hold back RFD.

It's similar with old generation always said "the world was better when I was younger".

I still don't understand the business model of RFD. Is this a for profit company? Is the revenue simply from the ads? I'm probably one of the few that does NOT come here for "deals", which are more like frivolous spending and FOMO than anything else.

They do make money from ads, referral links, and also sponsored posting.

While communities will eventually evolve, all I ask is this:
Has the quality of deals on the site gotten better or worse over the last 10 years?
Has RFD gotten more or less fun over the last 10 years?

Unfortunately the quality of deals have changed as companies & retailers have gotten better at managing their inventory. It's true a lot of what initially made RFD great is gone, but that's not due to the site's loss of focus. Because of the better retail management & online presence we unfortunately rarely see SCOP deals or price errors or clearance sales or door crasher sales. Those days are unfortunately gone. ☹️

RFD has instead gone from a deal site to more of a discussion forum that helps us make better more informed decisions about our purchases & use of services, which IMO is just as good, as it makes us better spenders, which saves us money.
Tis banana is IRIE 😎

10% off is cold, 50% off is warm, 75% off is hot, but FREE IS RFD!

Deals are definitely worse. And probably getting worse and worse year over year. Evidence: just look at Black Friday and Boxing Day deal forum, the most popular posts are not about deals, the most active posts are "this Black Friday/boxing day is the worst ever". That should tell something .

But good deals fundamentally come from companies, not RFD. RFD is an aggregator. If there are not good deals from business, RFD can't do a lot. For example, now probably you won't see a lot good deals on cars.

Regarding fun, that's really personal. But at least in investment forum, there are a lot funs there. There were not cryptocurrency and NFT 10 years ago, so exciting stuff. The most boring place is "art and photography", hardly see new posts there

But I have to say though this downvote system discourages people to post in hot deal and discussion. Especially for new members. You post a deal and get downvote and mocked, how likely you will post again, zero. In discussion, some sounds silly question is really just people don't know and we all have weaknesses. I'd even argue that even posting "crappy deals" need some effort and good intentions which should be recognized and encouraged. If we really need downvote, we should follow YouTube, show the button but hide downvote numbers

I think deals in general have become worse, unrelated to anything RFD.

I don't personally think the forum (the only part of the website I really go to) has got any worse. I think it's become more "professional", if that makes sense. I don't miss all the repetitive "here's this week's NCIX flyer" threads that ended up being a meme train of "wallet safe lol". It's a different vibe for sure, but I wouldn't say that's bad. I don't think that people should be able to lobby for changes to be made or not made based on their tenure. RFD exists independently of the "regulars".
