It seems like all of these classics are old enough that the copyright has expired and they are freely available online at sites such as http://www.classicreader.com.

Oh c'mon, did you really expect them to be giving away "Free" eBooks without a catch  ? They are in the business of selling books, after all!

The catch here is: They're free elsewhere to begin with!

In case anyone wants to "take advantage" of the "deal", Joseph Conrad's The Secret Agent isn't on classicreader.com.

I guess the advantage here is that they're formatted to be easily read on a eBook reader.

Does anyone see how to download the free eBooks off Shortcovers? It looks like you have to read them online since you can only add them to your library, not to your shopping cart. Did I miss the download button?

You do have to create an account and bookmark them/add them to your library if you want to read them online any time (free offers change every week). I don't think all the free offers are offered as downloads.

I just checked, this week's free book is an epub file which you can download and requires Adobe Digital Editions to read on the computer. Not sure how you transfer it to a reader/phone though (I don't have one).

Thanks for the info, icedtea. I completely missed the free book of the week. I'll have to bookmark and remember to return weekly to see what else is offered.
