Inexpensive POS and Cash Register Solutions

I would like to upgrade my Cash Register. I currently have a Casio with buttons/pad that when buttons/pad pressed the amounts show up on a screen for me as well as a screen for customer. I would like to upgrade because it is a little bit complicated to change prices, enter new descriptions and not enough buttons for all items selling.

I have been looking into touchscreen POS systems which are more user friendly, but prices seem to range from $1,000.00 to $3,000.00 which seems exorbitant.

Surely there must be cheaper user friendly systems out there - I am thinking like an Ipad that is secured with app that has a menu to process transactions and open a cash register drawer or just an app to process transactions.

Any inexpensive solutions out there?

While this is not available in Canada yet, there are other solutions similar (I am not not familiar enough with them to recommend). Have you considered using an IPAD instead of a touchscreen?:

Hi,
Not quite sure what you are looking for but here it goes:

"Touchscreen POS systems" - they are called "integrated systems" - they come with a pinpad and enable you to do most of what you need in a store (credit/debit card transactions, register, invoices, some of them even keep track of inventory) - that is why they are so expensive. If you've never seen one, go to any WindMobile store, they have them.

IPad, a Virtual Terminal will enable you to process transactions - credit cards ONLY - but that's about it. (no drawer opening) The advantage of this is that you have a multitude of processing options and it's quite portable. Te disadvantage is the higher rates compared to terminal processing.

If you need to clarify some aspects of your needs, or if you need more info, post or send me a private message.
Hope this helps,
Cristian.

I am looking for an inexpensive cash register that is user friendly as in easy to change menu and lots of menus for prices and descriptions. Current debit/credit processing is not hooked up to current cash register so do not need a cash register integrated with debit/credit processing. Just do not want to spend $1,000.00 or more on a POS system with far more functions than anyone would ever need.

Only way to get cheap is if it's used.
In general in the industry that you're looking at right now, you get what you pay for.

I just saw an article about Shopkeep Register Cloud based App using an ipad, the website is:

http://www.shopkeep.com/

Shopkeep is sort of what I am looking for, but I do not want to have to pay $49 a month to use. I visualize using an iPad with an App that processes transactions and operates a Cash Register drawer. I would not need the iPad to process debit/credit as I already have a terminal for that and the terminal runs separately from my current cash register.

I would like to think what I visualize is something that will be designed in the very near future through an App store so that us small business owners do not have to fork out $1,000 to $5,000 for a touchscreen POS system.

ShopKeep looks neat - I personally cannot vouch for them though. Interestingly enough square has got some competition in Canada now, however it doesn't look like they have a POS app yet. Still worth checking out:

You just have to think that square will get some real competition very soon.

I know what you're talking about like an App store type of POS system. I had an interview with the company as they run their system on Mac OS but I forgot the name of the company. They are based in Montreal
