Hi,

You can put 4 screws into the holes surrounding the knock out plug on the left or right side of the octagon box to hold it to the joist. You might have to enlarge the screw holes on the opposite side of the box to accommodate your screwdriver shaft. Or take out the knock out plug on the opposite side of the box to put the screws in at an angle.

Bumping this thread up.

About to start the process and researching different ceiling fan braces/mounts.

I figure the existing light box has to be close or attached to a joist, and I figure one of these boxes is much easier to install than one of those ceiling fan braces - i'd be worried if I put enough tension so that each end of the brace's teeth 'bite' in enough on each joist!

The one's that the OP linked seem difficult to install w/o enlarging the hole. But I did see this one: https://www.amazon.ca/Madison-Electric- ... 97&sr=8-14

Anyone use or experience something like this one? Looks like a very simple install. (ceiling fan would be 15-20lbs max)

My biggest worry is removing the existing light box - either the screws are stripped or they're nailed into the joist, meaning I'd have to use a reciprocating saw and hack it off.
