Just cancel card or also close the account?

Just called to cancel a credit card to avoid the annual fee. The specialist asked me if I also want to close the account. I said no and she said she will just leave the account there.

Do I also need to close the account to avoid the annual fee or just card cancellation will be enough? Thx.
