Kia Sorrento - Gas vs PHEV

We are a family of 6 - kids are all young (3 of the 4 need help buckling in). Already have a honda odyssey which is perfect for the family. The other car is a honda civic that we bought before we realized we would be a family of 6. With the youngest two going to same school in Sept, we are looking for another vehicle that can pick up all the kids, with good mileage and doesn't need to be as big as the van as we want to park it in the garage.

We considered the model Y but it was a bit too small and most other 6 to 8 seater SUVs were bigger than we need. We checked out the Kia Sorrento and we were thoroughly impressed. They seemed to have significantly improved the design over the years. 5 to 10 years ago, I would have never considered buying a KIA.

Size wise, it seems perfect. It seems to be one of the very few 6-7 seaters that are in the size range that we would like. We were originally considering the all gas model but on a price perspective, the PHEV seems to be only $2K more (after the gov't incentives).

My naive assumption is that a PHEV may be more prone to issues just because there's more moving parts but I really have absolutely no clue. Should I stick to all gas or pay the extra $2K for the PHEV version? In addition, how has KIA's reliability been in general? Would love to hear from your experience.

Probbaly not as they have an Odyssey already.

Have you considered an Outlander PHEV?

For me, 2k difference I would go with the PHEV Sorrento. What is the range on it?

I don’t see why you need two large vehicles when you already have an Odyssey. Unless you want to trade that in.

No, as mentioned, I already have an odyssey and don't need another minivan.

I did consider to outlander phev as well. The range seems similar to the sorrento.

Happy with the odyssey and don't need another minivan.

we have a 2018 kia sorrento and do like the car very much. no issues with it and liked it better than the competition. We have used the 7 seats a handful of times in 5 years that we've owned it but I honestly think you'd find it very annoying to use it on a daily basis with 3/4 kids needing help to buckle in. This isn't particular to this specific car, but any SUV that has those 2 extra seats in the far back.

If you like it I suggest you lease it for like 4 years. After that, re-evaluate.

If you want to keep it past warranty period, look elsewhere. The fact you're even bringing up reliability it means you're unsure of the Kia brand and likely wouldn't be comfortable keeping it past warranty.

And in grad school before getting a PHEV Sorento. I finally got a HEV Sorento after 10 months on the PHEV waiting list and not moving up one spot.

If 2 of the kids are able to climb in the back themselves then it should be doable. If you need to reach in to help, that's a pain. But the middle row captain chairs in my Sorento slide forward compared to the 3 row Sorento I had 10 years ago. I don't know whether middle row captains are standard, so I would check that. I'm happy with the HEV performance and mileage but now that I am about to move much closer to work, I would love to have the PHEV. But as I said, waiting for one to come in is a major obstacle. Otherwise, the '23 is a great vehicle.

Loooooooool Kia… gas or phev…

Better off buying a 300,000KM Collora and it’ll have better reliability and not set your house on fire
