Free phone unlock codes YMMV

So I was looking to unlock my phone for an upcoming trip and decided to call Koodo up directly. Since the CRTC is going to ban unlock fees on December 1st, I thought I could haggle my way to a free or cheap unlock code. I started by stating that the fees were going to be banned soon and that I'd like to possibly get a free or cheap code from them. Initially, the rep wanted to sell it to me for 50$, then shortly after brought it down to 35$. I said I could easily get it for 20$ online and that I'd probably wait till December 1st to get it free anyway. Shortly after, without really insisting, the rep came back and told me he could give me the unlock for free. He did state that my phone was completely paid off so that might have helped. He then puts me on hold and a few minutes later give me the code.

I'm sure this can work with other people and possibly other carriers. It's worth a shot as the codes are 20$+tax and it was a 5-10 minute phone call. Good luck!

Depends on the phone model and carrier. As an example, Alcatel pixi unlock code for Rogers is only 99 cents on eBay. Grinning Face With Smiling Eyes

If it's an iphone that will be the best price, but if it's android $20 is too much.

I have an android so not sure about the unlock prices of the iPhone. Web search showed about 20$ for a Galaxy S4 unlock and a quick eBay search showed around 10$USD.

I've never paid more than $5 for unlocking any of my Android phones. Unlocked my G4 3 days ago and paid $2.50 on Ebay.

Actually I did get my LG G2 unlocked for that much, but this was quite a while back. It was one of those Bell pricing error G2s.
The myth on the Internet is that Canadians are nice people. Those people who say this just haven't been on RFD.

Dangit! I have an iphone 6s on a 2 year contract. 1 year is done, but another year left before it gets paid off. So even if it isn't paid off by december can I call them on that date to unlock it free?

There's no harm in trying. Like I said, the rep mentioned my phone was paid off but I'm not sure if it made a difference. For December 1st, they won't be allowed to charge you anymore, regardless if your phone is paid off or not.
