LA chain Dave's Hot Chicken plans to open 30 restaurants across ON and BC

https://www.instagram.com/daveshotchicken/

Dave's Hot Chicken has plans to open 30 locations across Ontario and British Columbia. This is exciting news for spice lovers: scrolling through their epic Instagram feed is a visual smorgasbord of chicken tenders slathered in neon hot sauce, gooey mac n' cheese and crinkly golden fries.

The brand has partnered with Obelysk Foods for the expansion.

Strictly a guess...maybe they'll take over some of the former Nando's locations? lol
(the one in Toronto near Pape subway station comes to mind...)

Clearly chicken is an easy sell to Canadians, so why wouldn't this "Nashville via California" chain take a shot up here... For a sparsely populated country we already have:

Kentucky (KFC)
New Orleans (Popeye's)
Texas (Church's)
Georgia (Chick-Fil-A)
Portugal via South Africa (Nando's)
Buffalo, NY (Duff's, Anchor Bar, BWW)
Philippines (Jollibee)

and of course the locals:
Ontario (Swiss Chalet)
Quebec (St. Hubert)
Newfoundland (Mary Browns)

It's too bad we still don't have Shake Shack up here...

This is a recipe for losing money IMO...when you try to do too much too fast, you bleed cash. Overhead here is very different I think....which means costs are a lot higher here. Eg. Five Guys US vs Cda pricing is very different IIRC.

Other chains that came to GTA and were sent for the most part packing:

St Huberts
Kenny Rogers
Nando's now
Church's
KFC - on decline
Carl's Jr
We're all bozos on the bus until we find a way to express ourselves...

Failure is always an option...just not the preferred one!

Given that chicken (unlike beef) is cartel controlled in this country (same as dairy), shouldn't be a surprise a lot of these new players have had a tough go of it.

I can't believe that someone wasted their money on a Benny's franchise in Orleans. No one can dethrone St Hubert!

Wonder if Bojangles will ever come up here...

Don't they already have a Scores there to compete head on with St Hubert? Interesting...

But back to the topic of Dave's hot Chicken...looks like they're going after the crowd that loves spicy.
I don't do spicy so I'll pass...thanks!

I miss Scores. We had a few around here about a decade ago but they didn't last. I really liked their chicken and salad bar, but I guess it's hard to compete against the Chalet.

They currently have 3 locations total and they're looking at 100 locations (I'm guessing the 30 in Canada are part of that 100)? I'm not too familiar with how new franchises progress, but doesn't that seem a bit too ambitious?

The chicken looks good but I've never understood crinkle cut fries - they always remind me of low-quality cafeteria fries.

I'd like to try good nashville chicken. I've had it at PG Clucks and the chicken itself was good but it wasn't nearly as hot as I'd expect nashville chicken to be.

Opening up downtown on Queen Street in January

https://dailyhive.com/toronto/daves-hot-spot-toronto
In a news release, the popular fast-food chain has made plans to open in the city’s Parkdale area at 1582 Queen Street West, with an opening expected sometime in January of next year.

Dave’s Hot Chicken originates from Los Angeles, specializing in hot chicken tenders and sliders, with your choice of seven different levels of spice, No Heat to Reaper.

Speak for yourself.
I don't do spicy, but for those that do, this will be a nice alternative to having to settle for wings from one's favourite (spicy) wing place.
Done right, they'll be a very busy place. The reaper sauce is not readily available at just any chicken place. (for those who dare! )

The Kenny Rogers sign made me nearly go blind...
