Landline over to cell phone

My mom had her landline for 30+ years with bell and Rogers cable and internet but we officially got her a bell bundle to save since Rogers wouldn’t go down. However due to her health I was thinking after this contract is up maybe getting her a cell phone. Is it possible to get the same number? Or does a bundle get tricky to cross over ?

Thanks In advance

You can port a land line number to a cell service. I have done it

As soon as you do it, it will effectively cancel the land line and if you have a bundle discount, it will more than likely be affected

Thank you! I’ll probably keep it for the two years and switch her to a cell. Doesn’t need to be with bell, right ? Just need to find something big enough and easy for her to get use to a cell

i suggest start her off with a decent phone and a speakout account, $25 plus tax topup, good for 365 days, good for roughly 3 calls 2 minutes each per month($25/12 equals $2.25 each month less the service fee of $1.25)

If going with Speakout, keep an eye out for one of their bonus top up promotions. They used to have a lot of buy $100 get $25 free promos. You get a bigger bucket once and just top up with the $25 as needed or annually.
I got one years ago when I first signed up and use it for my burner / kijij phone. I've never had to top up more than $25 a year since and still have a lot left over "in case".

yep, i've been topping up for the neighbour and have about 4 extra SIM cards in my piggy bank. This year I got her the telus talk and tex 100 plan with unlimited incoming as a Christmas present and weaned her off the speakout

If you wait 2 years, who knows what phones will be available, but atm you can pick up this inexpensive and simple phone. I wouldn't buy it now to use in 2 years though. See the comments in the thread. May suit your mother. Or get her a prepaid FM plan now so she can learn how to use a cellphone. Guessing from your posts, your mother will likely have FM coverage.

I have ported my parents Bell landline to cellular few years ago. You should for sure do it to save money and make it portable as well.
As for the phone, it does not have to be a smartphone, my older co-worker still prefer flip phone style. Many carriers still offer many flip phones.

When you port a land line to wireless, how does the new wireless provider confirm that the number is yours? Like with wireless to wireless ports a text message will be sent to the owner to confirm. What happens with land lines?

i don't know how they do it now but when I ported my home # to voip.ms, all they wanted was the name of the account holder and the account number, but that was a while ago

Another option is something like number barn where you port your number have several options for a low monthly fee:

https://www.numberbarn.com/

Keep the old landline number there and just use it for voicemail.

Or forward to new cell phone.

So it's a great way to keep your number while planning what to do next.

This is how they still do it.
They ask for Landline Account Name, Account Address and Account Number.
And unlike a wireless port that's near instant (under an hour most of the time) landline ports typically take 2 business days on average.
