Landlord/Tenant tax question

Hi! I am a new landlord trying to figure out what to do with taxes.

I started renting my place to someone and I left my place to live with my partner, for which we also pay rent.

I am looking at the rental form T776, I see that I can add mortgage fees and other expenses but I am not sure how to add the rent that I pay to my landlord.

Any ideas here? Thanks in advance

That is because you don't. It is not technically a cost of renting out your place. (the alternative is you actually live there)

However, rent you pay could potentially be declared as rent paid on your taxes, the treatment/income criteria/refund amount varies and may only apply to Manitoba, Ontario, and Quebec (maybe more take that into account) .

I live in Ontario. On the tax return there's a section for rent paid. I believe there's a calculation to give some credit/refund if your income level does not exceed a certain level.

For your rental income, you are supposed to report the income. From that income, you can subtract from it any expenses like:
-Monthly maintenance fees (for condos)
-Repair costs
-Cost of having an agent find you the tenant
-If you have a mortgage on it, you can deduct interest portion of your mortgage

The rent you pay to your landlord is unrelated to the "business" where you rent out your property. I don't think CRA will accept your argument if you tell them choosing to live with your partner is a business expense.

I don't know much about this but I don't believe that you would be able to specify your rent there since you renting a place to live while you are renting out your property is irrelevant. It would be similar to you having a mortgage on one property that you have which you're living in and you have another property which you're renting and you want to use the mortgage amount that you have to pay for the place that you're living in with property that you're renting to tenants.

Don't know which provincial jurisdiction you live in since it isn't mentioned in your profile or your post but in the province of Quebec, the landlord would need to give you an RL-31 form which you can use on your Quebec income tax.
