lawn soil vs regular soil

so what's the difference? it seems to me it's just regular soil with fertilizer in it. i see that home depot is selling regular bags for 99 cents right now. can i not just use that for top dressing and then throw down some fertilizer?

the cheapest i could find on lawn soil is around th 3.50 4.00 when on sale

It depends on what you define as "regular soil"

most cheap soil (99 cent bags) is utter garbage, being mostly poor quality dark black humus with little mineral soil and poor nutrient balance. The best of the cheap soils is PC Black earth at two bucks a bag. Any of this stuff must be amended and improved to some degree to turn into a good quality soil for any purposes.

The simplest way to improve soil is adding a big bag of peat moss and a small bag of sheep manure and even a small bag of fine sand (scratch the sheep manure for lawns, not entirely necessary) per every 5 to 10 bags of 'black garden soil'

So by the time you buy all that, you end up in the 3 to 4 buck a bag range.

Honestly, for the best results, one 70 liter bag of PC Peat Moss to every 8 to 10 25 liter bags of PC black earth, with one bag of play sand added, makes a good soil for lawns, mix in your lawn seed if you are doing a small lift, fertilize, and go.

Just a guy who dabbles in lots of stuff learning along the way. I do have opinions, and readily share them!

If you are just top dressing then regular soil should be fine. I believe lawn soil just has starter fertilizer in it. If i'm trying to seed bare patches in my lawn then i either use lawn soil or triple mix and then throw some starter fertilizer on top. either works fine.

At Lowes, i've seen Sta-Green lawn soil for $3 and Scott's lawn soil for 2 /$7 when on sale.

+1 not sure I would add peat moss, but other than I agree. As with anything else, a lot of marketing gimmicks are used to confuse/scare the consumer into buying something they don't need or paying more money. Mixing in compost is your best bet especially if it's from your own composter

Checkout the thread on this soil in hot deals. I think it’s real soil (vs Rona black earth), however there were some complaints about weeds and excessive sticks/ twigs
