[LCBO] Crown Royal Northern Harvest - $30 (Bayview + Sheppard, ON)

Just got back from Bayview + Sheppard... they got in a skid this morning. There's still probably 200 bottles left as at 10am.

Of course LCBO's online inventory is useless... you've gotta call the store.

Yeah there's an online inventory... except it's completely unreliable. E.g. this shipment isn't even there.

This stuff is next to impossible to get because no stores will ship it (they all want to keep it for their own store/customers) and all the stores in Ottawa have pre-paid purchases that take precedence so even when they do receive a shipment, stock is earmarked already and unattainable. I asked if I could pre-pay and they said no, too many people have already.

Picked up 2 bottles last Friday. Wish I picked more up, but I wanted to sample it first. Didn't think the store would sell out so quickly since they had 300+ in stock. Checked the stock on Sunday - zilch.

Anyhow - I'm by no means a whisky expert, but Crown is my beverage of choice. Compared to regular Crown, Northern Harvest goes down much more smoother. However, the bigger difference is afterwards. Northern Harvest doesn't have a bad aftertaste at all, but boy, my chest felt pretty damn warm compared to the regular stuff. I also note that Northern Harvest has 5% more alcohol content.

It's selling around $38-40 in Alberta, when you can find it, $30 is amazing. It's good, especially for a Crown product, and even at the Alberta price it's a great as both a Canadian whisky and as a rye. When the hype dies down, and assuming the price doesn't increase, it will be a staple in my cabinet.

With that said, it isn't my favourite rye in my cabinet, let alone whisky. If the award peaked your interest in Canadian whisky, Lot 40 is comparatively priced in Alberta, and and I prefer it, and Alberta Premium Dark Horse is cheaper here, and a good rye. If budget isn't a big concern, the High West ryes are fantastic.

The Northern Harvest is also actually from a mash bill of 90% rye, whereas regular Crown is likely mostly corn.

Heck, at least it's available in Ontario. Quebec does not even carry it.

Because no one would have guessed that Crown Royal would produce a really good whiskey. And now people want to try it.

And it is a really great whiskey — it's just that no one knew about it before.
