As already posted yes, the screen is much better. 500 nits vs 300 nits with HDR and Dolby Vision and G-Sync support. Its colour gamut is higher a well. Chassis is much nicer and more sturdy, cooling is much improved. Has per-key RGB. Thunderbolt 3 is added. Other internals are the same (cpu, gpu, ram, etc).

I've never physically used the y540 before but I have used the y740. It's has a very nice build and feels more solid and premium compared to some of my other more plastic gaming laptops (I'm partial to Eurocom/Sabre and currently own one as my main gaming laptop with an i7, 2070 and 144Hz display). The 500 nits HDR/DV display is a big upgrade over the y540's somewhat dim 300 nits display. If I were to step up to the y740, I'd configure it the same way with an i7 and 2070 8GB as well as its 144Hz G-Sync display to future proof it as much as possible. Using the SAVE30 that'd run $1,770.99 - $159.40 Rakuten = $1,611.59 + tax.. A very good deal for a near top of the spec gaming laptop (user upgraded memory and NVMe SSD of course):

Thanks. There is doorbuster prebuilt for $1,889.99. The only difference is 16GB RAM and 1TB HDD. Is it for $110 more? Even I go and buy one 8GB RAM it will be around $40.

I bought the Lenovo, Y540, 15 81SY00D4US when it was on sale for $899.99. After buying protection and office, cost was just around $1200.
Is this a much better option? Should i return it and try for this instead? I havent received it yet.
I mostly need it for work, but would love the option to play some minor games (sims 3 and sims 4)
I also hate the sound of laptop fans running constantly... Recommendations?
I havent had a laptop in years so I am very out of loop on what is best deal here.
Thank you

I don't really belong here since I'm looking at the 17" models, but even if the 17" did have 500 vs 300, I'm not sure any of that is worth the over $300 difference for the 17"
$200 and change? for a 15" maybe, but even then.... It'd be a close call.

I want to cancel my order and get the Y740 instead because of the better build quality mentioned above, but i can't get through to them, do you think its possible to cancel later tonight when they are less busy and order the Y740 now? Their order status/cancellation portal doesnt work either

Which Y740 configuration are you planning to get?

I think you still have time to cancel, I believe Lenovo do not ship the unit right away

I originally ordered a desktop computer. I was able to cancel that order online. But I had created a profile on Lenovo website.

Elrondolio wrote: Good find OP! You can get the original config you quoted (with RTX 2060 and i5) down to $1,012.82 using Lenovo SMB Pro after rebate.

If you use the Lenovo SMB Pro site via Rakuten you can get an even better deal with the same 9% cashback. Here's a pretty great config with i7-9750H, RTX 2060, 144Hz screen and Windows 10 Pro for $1,294.99 - $116.55 Rakuten = $1,178.44 + tax using SAVE30. I'd recommend purchasing the 8GB memory and 256GB SSD config as you'll want to user upgrade these components for cheaper and better quality than Lenovo can provide for.
*Note: when you configure, Windows 10 Pro is a $0 upgrade

Weird I'm trying to use the Pro site but it fails at the account creation because it requires a 7 digit Postal Code? What the heck.
