As per OP, 1 slot is empty and available for upgrade. One slot is soldered with 8gb stick.

This laptop is a consideration for some.
24gb is sufficient for 99% of users. I'm a heavy user and never exceed 80% or so utilization with 16GB installed. Obviously you already know that, but I think you may overestimate and mislead people on how much RAM they need. People looking for more than 24GB of ram likely aren't interested in 4500u models.

There's no implications from my statement, just some math.

People already know I think 16GB is good enough for most, but I state it again in full disclosure.

It's the cheapest Thinkpad with a Ryzen 4000 series processor. And this week AMD announced the Ryzen 5000 U-series mobile processors, most of which are based on the Zen 2 architecture (same as Ryzen 4000 U-series mobile CPUs)...so many 2021 Thinkpads will not see a huge improvement in performance, especially at the lower end of the Thinkpad spectrum.

There are some drawbacks compared to consumer-grade laptops like the Dell Inspiron, but Thinkpads (even the E series) generally do have better build quality. I have several E-series laptops at home that are going strong after 4-5 years (E550, etc.).

Fair enough, it is appreciated. Personally, I have 32GB installed in a device but have never actually exceeded 16gb use.

This may be one of the first worthy opponents to the Dell Inspiron 4500u (if stock is good).

What are the drawbacks?

Compared to the Dell Inspiron 15 5505 Ryzen 5 4500u:
- higher price (vs. Dell with 10% discount)
- fewer options for memory upgrades
- primary SSD slot is m.2 2242 instead of m.2 2280 (there are fewer options for that size)
- warranty is not as good, especially if you want 3 years of coverage

Edit: Actually, the warranty upgrade for the E15 isn't bad. You can get 3 years of onsite support for $92.82 more. That's pretty good, IMO.

Dogshit will be dogshit on rfd

What would happen to a house where you only dump some of the trash but let the rest continue to build up?
You know what I'm insinuating.

Is there one free ram slot? does anyone know?

It says that it is soldered, but that is okay for me as long as there is at least one free ram slot.

This or the 4700 e14 for $130 more?

I have a E470 and so far only replaced a faulty memory. Pretty happy about it.

PS ordered a X1C Gen8 and returned. Defective OOB with issue on the fan.
1. Buy cheap, buy twice
2. Don’t buy because it’s cheap. Buy it when needed or it brings convenience/happiness/better quality in life
3. Buy now think (regret/return) later
4. If the gut says don’t tell your lady, don’t!
