[Lenovo Canada] ThinkPad T14s, Ryzen 5 Pro 5650U, 16GB/512GB, 3 years warranty, $963, 10% cashback

ThinkPad T14s, Ryzen 5 Pro 5650U, 16GB/512GB, 3 years warranty

https://www.lenovo.com/ca/en/p/laptops/ ... 20xfs05900

Display specs: 14" FHD (1920 x 1080), IPS, Anti-Glare, Non-Touch, 45%NTSC, 300 nits, LED Backlight, Narrow Bezel

Camera is good: 1080P FHD IR/RGB Hybrid with Microphone, Privacy Shutter

Equipped with WWAN: Quectel EM120R-GL 4G LTE CAT12, no eSIM

RAM is NOT upgradable.

Warranty: 3 Years Courier or Carry-in

As a T14s, build quality and materials used should be decent.

Price is $963. Rakuten cashback is 10% on June 6.

Overall specs seems good for the price, except low display color gamut (45%NTSC).

If good display color gamut is a must, Lenovo is selling a L13 with 5675U, 16GB, 512GB and 72%NTSC display through eBay for $846:

Firstly wanted to say thanks for continuously posting laptop deals. I have alerts set for Lenovo because I'm in the market for a "must buy" under $1k. And I see your name most often.

Secondly, I keep seeing comments with people saying modern or upcoming(?) AMD chips are far more desirable than Intel, which I would not have known. Is this one of the desirable CPUs people are saying to hold out for?

I am not interested in gaming, just productivity

Thanks again for these consistent posts

Would the e14 with the Ryzen 7 processor at
$872.66 be the better deal for most people? Newer processor, better GPU, and slightly worse build quality? https://www.lenovo.com/ca/en/p/laptops/ ... 21eb0021us

Rakuten crashed down to 3% overnight sadly

People have been saying that Phoenix chips from AMD are going to be a game changer, but so far the OEM’s are only putting them in laptops with a discrete gpu. I doubt we’re going to see any big shipments of those chips in the thin and light segment this year at this point, back to school is arriving shortly.

Gen 2 should be written in title...

T14s Gen 3 deal last holiday season was around $1300 after CB. https://forums.redflagdeals.com/lenovo- ... s-2582725/

I would say the biggest disadvantage of this laptop is the shitty screen. I'd wait until the Gen 3 goes on sale, if you can afford a slightly higher price.

I owned a Thinkpad T14 and it was awful, I hope this one is better given that it's using AMD.

Ran inferno hot, bad battery, and the display is awful. Good build quality and keyboard though.

Decent deal. Last gen but performance holds up well.

Great build quality, classic and familiar.

Doubt things will change much with the screen.

That said, fantastic username.

this is the case with almost any intel laptops that are thin. I've owned a T14s Gen 3 AMD for months now and its perfect, never gets hot even though I'm using 2 displays in addition to the laptop. I avoid intel chips in laptops like the plague.

T14s wins out on battery life as it has a 57Wh vs the 45Wh in the E14. Over 26% larger. Despite the bigger battery, the T14s is 15% lighter than the E14 and has better build quality.

The ports on the T14s are also significantly better with two USB C 3.2 Gen 2 while the E14 has none. The T14s has HDMI 2.0, while the E14 has 1.4b and maxes out at 4K30Hz.

In addition to all that, the three-year warranty on the T14s is another plus.

Gen 3 also starts with a low-gamut panel, but it is 16:10 versus 16:9.

I read that all the FHD panels offered on the T14s, including the 100% sRGB ones, aren't really that great. From the Gen 3 AMD deal posted here Black Friday 2022, the higher resolution panels were not available for it.

Anyways, as always, the longer you wait, the more you will get for your $$$ :) .

There is only 1 good panel for the T14s Gen 3 - 14" WUXGA (1920 x 1200), IPS, Anti-Glare, Non-Touch, 72%NTSC, 400 nits, Narrow Bezel, Low Power.

All other ones are trash, and I compared this myself by buying a different model with the lower quality screen - the difference is night and day and its actually the combination of nits and color gamut that make a bigger difference than the resolution on the 14" screen.

IMO not worth buying if you can't get a 72% NTSC + 400 nits screen at the minimum, it is a big difference. I would have preferred a 2.2K screen on the T14s Gen 3 but Lenovo are purposely not releasing that screen type with the AMD model in North America, in order to force people to buy the shitty intel CPU versions.

There are T14s Gen 3 AMD models with a 2.2K screen on Lenovo Asia website such as Singapore.

The 5650U CPU is a little old, but it is still quite good in term of performance and power efficiency.

6800U or 6850U would be significantly better: more powerful and much better iGPU. However, I haven't seen good deals of laptops equipped with these CPUs within these few months, maybe because of inflation and probably also a shortage of these CPUs.

Zen 4 CPU should be even better, but I haven't seen any ThinkPad equipped with Zen 4 CPU, and price will be very high when it is released; we probably need to wait until Black Friday to see some good deals.

I added some info about a ThinkPad L13 to the OP. That one has a reasonably good display, and it is currently selling for $846.

Okay deal due to the 3yr warranty, but at same specs except storage the Probook 455 deal was better (now OOS) https://forums.redflagdeals.com/newegg- ... 9-2619388/

The Low gamut panel is shit but easily replaced with the Innolux N140HCG-GQ2 for $150 if you desire. If you do mostly email and spreadsheets it's not so bad, only obvious once you put it side by side with a better monitor.

Btw I'm still rocking a P14s gen 1 with Ryzen 7 4750u and 40GB RAM, love it and runs anything I throw at it. Runs cool and battery is great, can't say the same about the XPS13 with a core I7-1195G7.

Fwiw - I bought a T14s Gen 3 for my wife late last year. I was a little worried about the screen after reading all the comments but for her and most normal productivity people - it would be more than fine. She’ll also be docked a lot of the time anyway. I did find it a little dull compared to my P1 4k screen for obvious reasons but not a showstopper. It is very fast, cool and quiet. Unlike my P1 which is just fast. :)

So my $0.02 - many people would be fine with the screen and price point as is for a familiar Thinkpad experience, and Lenovo knows this.

Should I pull the trigger on this? I need a new replacement for work that is fast and efficient. I'm usually docked so the screen isn't a huge issue for me. Thanks!

During the pandemic I went extremely hard on Lenovo laptops and tried out too many. I ended up with a T14S Gen 2

Here is my post on it
just bought a T14s Gen 2 with what I thought were godmode specs (for me)

This will be my FOURTH Lenovo laptop in the last 3 months and might thoughts might be helpful to any other prospective buyers. Lenovo has offered quick and easy returns.

1. X1 G9 -1165 - 16gb (soldered) - 1tb - 400nits 16:10 fhd+, XE graphics - $1562
2. (Current) Thinkbook 16p gx- ryzen 5600h, 8+8dimm - 512gb (but extra slot), 400 nits 16:10 1600p, 3060 - ordered this before the x1 but took forever, arrived a week ago $1,445.42
3. X1 extreme g4 - 11800h, 16gb + free slot, 512gb + extra slot, 400 nits 16:10 1600p, 3050ti - this one the display never worked. I tried to reorder but lenovo never priced it at the same point again. $1,757.81
4. T14s Gen 2 - ryzen 5800u, 32gb ram soldered, 1tb ssd, 4k 500 nits, radeon graphics - $1456

https://www.lenovo.com/ca/en/perkopolis ... 2TPT144SA1

I also own a T14 G1 with 107xx for my work computer. My next laptop is an update to a 6th Gen i5 Hp Spectre x360 with 8gb ram and integrated graphics

Here are my thoughts in order of above. Obviously this feedback is all subjective to how I want to use the laptop - Web browsing - photo editing and management - multimedia - and I want to be future proof
1. Returned the X1 G9 because it felt like I was buying too sexy of a package for what I wanted, and felt dumb for locking myself into 16gb ram system forever. I was paying a premium for lightness and battery when its mainly on my coffee table and lap, not much travelling. Plus I had high hopes for ryzen.
2. I like this machine. Screen is nice. But I wish it was 10keyless and a bit lighter. I'm just returning it for the deal on the T14s Gen 2.
3. Expected this to be the one I stuck with, but the display was completely unresponsive upon delivery.

Getting a machine that has 32gb of ram is future proof, 1tb of SSD is plenty, Ryzen 5800u is beefy, and the 500nit 4k screen seems to be top of the class short of OLED. I don't know if I'll miss having a dedicated graphics card - I don't game at all and apparently lightroom and photoshop don't really use it.
Since this post I have bought my wife a T14s Gen 2 as well, this is the specs and price paid... $1090
