LF: Credit Card to pay wedding expenses

Hi everyone,

I'm planning a wedding for 2022 with my fiancee and we are looking at putting down a small deposit and starting to pay for expenses. Currently I use a Simplii Visa Cashback and the Capital One World MC. What CC would be the most optimal for this? We are thinking of booking Whistle Bear, which is a golf course but the venue is operated by Pearle Group which oversees restaurants. I dont think my Simplii Visa (which offers 4% back on restaurants) would give me 4% back. Is it worth signing up for the new AMEX Aeroplan card?

As some background, they charge a 3% fee for MC and Visa or 4% fee for Amex...

Thanks!

If you have some big expenses coming up it always makes sense to apply for new card to get the welcome bonus. You're going to pay for the annual fee for the card(s) and the surcharge at the venue. You have to decide whether the fees justify the points. If your deposit is greater than $1000, you could probably get 50k points on the deposit from the welcome bonus on various cards.

Unless you know what kind of charge the venue is it will most likely be in the 1x/other category. For example, when I visit a restaurant in a hotel it's always charged as a travel expense and not a restaurant expense. I've also had charges at various golf clubs and most of them are in the other category but one golf course I visit is in the travel category.

Ask them if they have a cash discount. As in for paying with actual cash—$100 bills.

This. Or ask if they accept payment in crypto.

But ya, if there's a fee for payment cards with the venue, then pay via cash or crypto. If you insist on paying with a payment card, Mogo has a 2% earn rate. Since you'd probably be incurring a fair bit of spend in different categories...it really depends on your goal...
  1. Mogo for simplified 2% cashback. If you wanna get more aggressive, CDC's 3% cashback (in crypto) card is affordable. CDC also has no forex fee (up to a generous cap) if you're able to do a honeymoon out of the country
  2. AmEx SimplyCash Preferred for AmEx friendly 2% cashback
  3. For food heavy spend, grab Cobalt
  4. Grab FFP cards if those FFP's work for you
Premium Life: CDC [Icey Private Status]/SwissBorg Genesis/InLock/Netflix UHD [100% off]/Amazon [Prime 100% off]/Instacart [Express]

What cards would you recommend? Jerry's master list is like $200 rewards. Apart from the new Amex platinum, what else should I look at? I think our deposits are going to be ~$10k total (yes I know this is a lot...)
