LF: Laptop for a teenager

Hello,

I am looking for recommendations on a good, reliable, preferably inexpensive laptop for a teenager. Will be used for school work and (more likely) extended play sessions in Fortnite. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. A budget of about $500 is really the max.

Thanks in advance.

$500 laptop for a "Fortnite" could be tricky , $500 for a computer (playing fortnite) very possible ...

Thanks. I hadn't considered this option (I'm not sure I have the skills or the know how to build one) but it certainly helps to see the itemized costs versus something that's in a package.

This refurb could work, it looks like it had dedicated graphics $529: https://www.dellrefurbished.ca/laptops/ ... 32970.html

Recommended Fortnite System Requirements:

* Nvidia GTX 660 or AMD Radeon HD 7870 equivalent DX11 GPU.
* 2 GB VRAM.
* Core i5 2.8 Ghz.
* 8 GB RAM.
Windows 7/8/10 64-bit.

Machines with dedicated GPU's will progressively cost more than those with an integrated GPU's. At the same time gaming laptops become progressively heavier in weight due to additional (cooling/gpu)components, battery requirements, panel requirements and are much pricier than a standard laptop. At $500 budget you are going to give in to these more expensive gaming machines and settle with something of rather recent Intel HD graphics and low to average scalability.

You are looking for either a used or refurbished unit in that price range.

No Fortnite. Only Solitaire and Candy Crush.

Here's one: http://www.dell.com/en-ca/shop/dell-lap ... tsb_s8012e

OP can use this $25 off coupon: $25OFF$500PC and Ebates currently has 10% cashback for Dell.

Cost:
$599 - $25 coupon = $574
$574 - 10% Ebates cashback = $516.6 + (tax on $574)

This should be able to run Fortnite okay on lower settings:

OP, if you are considering the deal suggested by @dealseaker101 , the instructions given by @hostlead in this thread might interest you.

Tall call getting a light laptop with good endurance on battery and capable of some pleasant gaming at low/medium settings [a teenager will want to play other titles beside fortnite for sure later on] under $500. Maybe a recent-model refurbished business-grade laptop with a discrete gpu or a latest generation consumer-grade laptop with integrated gpu (with discrete gpu it'd be over budget) and dual channel RAM. If the laptop was meant for homeworks and the like, I'd consider the $480 2nd generation X1 Carbon with QHD touch screen at refurbio -- CPU/GPU are not that strong, but rfdealers who bought one last time it was available gave good feedback [search thread on Expired Deals. FREESHIP coupon for free shipping].

There are usually a few laptop models on sale (Dell, Lenovo, Microsof Store, etc.) during the back to school sales season that starts early August. That could be another option. But, a good deal for less than $500 is anyone's guess.
