Living in a former grow-op and didn't know it

Living in a former grow-op and didn't know it

Been renting a house for a few years, upon renting the house I asked if it was a grow op ever and was told no. Time went by and the neighbor asked me if I knew the house was a former grow op and of course I was shocked. I approached the landlords, asked via email so it's in writing and they admitted to it. I asked for the documents that it was remediated and they sent it.

Now, besides being very angry about this and feeling disgusted. Are there any health issues that can come from living in a remediated grow op? This took place in Alberta. I would assume that there are health risks but I am no pro on this.

If it's properly remediated then there's no risk.
Are there any signs of mold?
If the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.

Nope, no risks if that's all they were doing, main issue is just high humidity causing mold and other damage, and possibly some concerns about wiring.

I thought you owned a house? Lots of other posts about basement heights, nails in shingles etc. Has your account been compromised?

Bought a new house, going to be moving in soon.

Typically though, will only B lenders take on a mortgage for a former grow op and are insurance rates usually pretty high?

not sure what this has to do with you renting it. If the place has been remediated, i imagine it won't affect insurance or mortgage

It's Friday, don't be so grumpy. I was asking a question. I've been living here a few years and just found out recently so of course, would like to know if there could be risks, I already said I wasn't a pro at this. The issue I have is I asked verbally and was told no prior to renting. Then to find out they lied.

no risks if remediated - though I think the owner would want to periodically check to ensure no issues develop after?

Funny, we were looking at a house in our neighborhood to buy (mainly for my sister) and one house was listed low compared to others selling in the area.

Turns out it is a "stigmatized property" as it was used as a grow op over 10years ago. The seller was able to produce a report that shows when they bought it, they did a full inspection & remediation of the molding.

And they produced 2 follow-up air quality check reports that confirmed no mold in the air or spores - taken a couple years apart (one was 2 years old).....to go with the listing.

Suffice to say, the house sold for over asking & very comparable to other sold properties! The seller must have been laughing all the way to the bank - bought the property originally for a low price and with the hot GTA housing market now, sold for a pretty penny.

Plus, they were renting it out this entire time - they definitely came out on top!

If properly remediated, the air quality, mold levels, etc. are probably now better than most other homes that were never go-ops...

I don't know in Alberta but in Québec, if the house was ever used for a grow-op, it must be written in the sale agreement, even if it was "fixed" (this is not a choice, it has to be written). Usually air quality tests and inspections are done to make sure it was fixed properly (sellers can do cosmetic work without properly fixing the mold issues that are behind the drywall so you must be careful).

I personally think that if there was a space in your house that was used for growing anything. And its properly sealed with all the environmental controls. Should be an added bonus. Just because Cannabis is grown does not make it some mould farm. Mould is the last thing you want for a grow for anything. Why would anyone consume mouldy organics?

Obviously a bum grow where the person(s) are looking to make a quick buck will never spend the money for proper HVAC. That is def. a redflag.

There is def. a divide and stigmatization of 'grow ops'. But I personally think that when it's done right and properly you could have yourself a year round sustainable indoor farm. I've seen it done, not me, but a few friends of mine are big into building and maintaining grow rooms. Be it cannabis or vegetables.
