Hot if you want to upgrade SSD for old 2012 MacBook Pro/Air as they are using customized SSD. Still not too shabby as an external SSD for $50 with 480GB + external enclosure.

Checked stock. Nothing available near me. Sad panda. Crying Face

Thanks for the heads-up though, OP! Smiling Face With Sunglasses
Why settle for full retail price when you can wait and get it at a lower price for better value (even better if there's a bundled freebies deal)? 😉

They just call it open box because it's final clearance. All storage devices they send the return back to manufacturer.

Is it possible to just use these as a regular external SSD?

100% possible. The point is to put your original HD into the enclosure and use it as an external drive.

For this price, does it worth to get an enclosure and use it as an external drive?
Or just better to buy an external drive?

Enclosure included in the package. $50 for a 480GB external SSD is not too bad, if you are not crazy about speed. Those are SATA3 drives, so won't be as fast as the latest external drive.

Thanks much OP! Ordered one for a 2012 MBP Retina and one for a 2010 for ISPU. The 2012 uses a special SSD formfactor that requires an adapter to use an m.2, so this is a nice option.

Update: picked up the drives today. They appeared to be NOS (new old stock) that has just sat around for ages.

The boxes contain an upgrade kit which is a nice touch - two Mac model-specific screwdrivers and a microfibre cloth. Both came with a surprisingly well built aluminum enclosure.

Absolute steal for the price and quality.

If you're in Calgary, Richmond LD has one of these still in the cash glass case.

For those considering upgrading your MacBook Air or pro SSD please be aware that different years have different pin layouts. I checked the SSDs at London drugs, very good prices, but it doesn’t look like any are good for the 2013-2017 (12+16 pin)
