Haven't been to Rain either, but I understand it's more trendy rather than romantic?
Rain has a very contemporary / trendy decor, but it isn't so loud that you can't have a quiet conversation or setup that two persons can't have a good time.

But, I agree that many trendy restaurants are poor choices for a romantic meal. I was at the Drake last night, and although the food was good, I wouldn't recommend it for a romantic dinner because it gets to be loud and busy.

Auberge is definitely one of the good choices for a romantic event.

Rain - elegant, modern atmosphere. Love going there for drinks/dessert
Octagon - old world elegant, food is decent but not out of this world

Try Truffles - food is excellent and service is superb!
