What sort of use case you have? Do you need occasional access to access some websites which have geoblocking or are you looking for something which will let you stream videos etc.
The answers you get will depend on your use case. There are free versions of proper commercial VPN providers who allow single connection and few hundred MBs of data usage.

However, if you are looking to transfer a lot of data, then reliable <> free,

Doesn't exist. Operating a VPN service costs money, and nobody can afford to open up a charitable service to the entire internet. If you aren't paying money, then you'll be getting limited unreliable service in return for handing over personal information. Presumably you wanted the VPN to protect privacy?

Some VPNs offer limited free introductory service, with limitations like slow throughput, limited server list, no torrents, data volume or connect time limts - for example Windscribe. Others offer a free service supported by advertising and by selling client information to advertisers - for example Hotspot Shield.

They might occasionally be useful if you have no other choice, but you won't be happy with them for regular use.

Then there are some browser-integrated free VPNs, like the one offered by Opera. But they only work for web site access within that browser. They don't cover other web services.

Some VPNs offer cheap "lifetime" deals, but generally their business model is to suck in as many clients as possible with the lifetime deal while offering reasonable performance - then they cut performance and service drastically, and disappear with the money a couple of years down the road when most clients have given up on them anyway.

There are also occasional short-term promo deals. There was one yesterday for KeepSolid VPN (6 months free) - and you're in luck, looks like it's still active: https://sharewareonsale.com/s/free-keep ... 0-discount

Opera browser has VPN. All you need to do is turn it on and choose the region. I don't use it much, but have tried streaming video using it, but sometimes slows down.

If you want a good VPN for free you're looking at limited servers/features or low speeds/data limits.

I was using ProtonVPN's free service before getting the FastestVPN $20 lifetime deal.

If you want to download you have to pay. I use Trust Zone. Very good download speeds. For internet use only I use Hoxx in Firefox. Its free and convenient. Pretty good

I would avoid any "browser" style VPN as you're probably linked to tons of other users making it not safe. If there is a free VPN, don't count on it to be secured and you will be logged.

Don't cheap out on your protection. ExpressVPN is $99 USD for 12 months. However if you want value, NordVPN is $125.64 USD for 3 years. Do your research. If you are doing what I think you may be doing, FeralHosting is around $17 CAD a month for both seedbox and VPN (UK). If you're worried about the $17 CAD a month, you can split this cost between 3 other users making it $4.25 a month. 1TB Seedbox and 4 people using the VPN. Worth EVERY penny IMO.

Hope this helps.

You can open a oracle cloud free account, get a VPS and then install a VPN server on it. That's free. You can even choose a few locations around the world. If you want to register one I will even install the VPN for you (either openVPN or wireguard or both) :)
