Looking for a structural engineer in Ottawa to inspect cracks in wall and basement.

Some cracks have appeared both on a load bearing wall and on the concrete floor in basement not far from that wall. House is over 35 so the cracks aren't the usual "settling". Could be coincidental cracks but I want to know for sure. Already have one quote at $2500 to come in and give me a report. I have no idea if that's a fair price but it seems high.

Thanks in advance.

Based on recent experience your quote is about right on the higher side. We had an inspection $2100 but they just took about 15 photos, added a small comment to each and suggested we get another engineer ???

We did and for the same price he was fantastic. Inspected, photographed then drew up architectural drawings with specific details on how the repair should proceed.

The challenge/luck f course is locating the good guys :)

Thanks. These guys have a good reputation. I guess I have sticker shock. I sent them about six pictures with a copy of the floorplan. Their reply said that they would do structural site inspection and give me a report investigating the cause/s of these cracks with recommendations to "stop the cracks". Turnaround time is a week after the inspection. From what you're saying, maybe I should just go with them as I might not save much shopping around.

Doesn’t hurt to get another quote or two just to put your mind at ease that you’re not getting ripped off in your area.

Interestingly. the founder of Star Engineering was the engineer who did the structural design required in our big reno in 2010. I just located his card (which reminded me of the name of his company) and will contact him today. He might be the best pick for this job because he's undoubtedly kept the drawings he did for us and would understand if any of the structural changes are contributing.

$2500 and will they be opening walls to look at what is going on? I had a structural engineer out once a decade ago and it was only like $500 or less, but by that point the entire wall in question was bare foundation so fully visible and accessible.

We ended up going with Star Engineering (thanks for the nudge, @EasyCompany251. Their proposal was under $2k and they've already done the site inspection (and took dozens of pictures). Am waiting for the final report and am already greatly relieved that we took this step.
