Lost Credit Card Replacement - Received the same card in the mail?

I find it very suspicious that twice, once with MBNA and the other time with Scotiabank, I've requested a replacement card and an identical card arrives in the mail. Neither times did I actually lose the card, but I did report it as lost in order to get a new card. Once to get the new look Smart Cash card and once to upgrade to a PayWave version of my Scotia card. What I mean by identical is that the card number is the same, the expiry date is the same, and the CID/CVV is the same. This is a huge safety risk in my opinion because had I actually lost the card in public, someone could easy use the card to do some online shopping. Of course I advocate checking your purchases regularly, but some people just don't. I know for a fact that I can interchangeably use both of my Smart Cash cards (as I've recently switched back to the old look ;) because it's nicer).

When you requested a replacement card, did you specify that it was lost/stolen? Some people request new cards if they have damaged their card, but that doesn't happen as often as losing possession of the card.

I have never called in a card lost when it hasn't been. I just say it was damaged or the chip isn't working.

How weird would it look if you keep losing your card every year or so?

If you call in and simply say you lost/misplaced the card, then a card with the exact same numbers will be sent to you as replacement. That way your pre-authorized payments from your card will not be affected. But if you call in and say that your card is STOLEN, then you will be provided with a new card with new numbers. Then of course you'll have to make changes to your pre-authorized payments.
